tri or quad xfire? 6990x2 or 6990+6970

Hey guys,

I currently have a Asus 6990 (about to be watercooled as soon as pccg send me the correct reservoir)

but since im in the upgrading mood i have decided to get 3x dell U2711 27: monitors - to run these i figured id add another card into the mix

What would you do? get another 6990 (dual gpu card) or get a 6970 (single gpu card)

Whatever i got would end up watercooled as well

Cheers for your input,
Also if you had any suggestions for a different monitor let me know cause im still undecided.

tri over quad. Most scenerio's I have seen, shows quad scaling to be very poor in comparison to SLI and TRI. The gain is not worth it imho.

EDIT: This could help: http://www.overclockers.com/forums/s...d.php?t=674215

Don't get 3x U2711s. You'll need quad SLI gtx580s to get any framerate out of it.

Get 3x U2410 for a little cheaper, they are 1920x1200 24 inch IPS panels. They are the most popular panels for eyefinity, and perform well with 6990+6970 config.

Disagree absolutely. I see substantial gains comparative my former triple 6970 setup. Ran 6990x6970+2, usually 15-30% gains depending on title. GPU usage often was across the board 99%.

Opted for a pair of 6990s because of the PLX bridge and it's 48 lane switcher. Provides competed frames to be sent through pci-e bus or crossfire bridge at full x16 bandwidth. Also provides onboard GPUs to communicate with each other at extreme low-latency and, again, at 5.0 GT/s. Running 3446x1920 & 5800x1920 respectively at portrait modes; been able to maximize details on every game tested so far, more than half the time with enabled 2 or 4x EQAA (in 5x1 P) and almost always with 8xEQAA in 3x1 (exceptions being games not supporting beyond 4xMSAA like Metro2033 and Crysis/Warhead, which stutter beyond 4xMSAA). AF x 16 in all circumstances.

Seen negative scaling in one game, Just Cause 2, by virtue of it not supporting beyond 3 GPUS. Sucks, because I love that game, seriously. Strangely, my 5870 quad was fully utilized in the title. As a secondary note, I eventually reverted from quadfire during the 5800 series rise to prominence, as scaling was spotty & eyefinity performance oft of shambles. It's absolutely nonsense to project these past failures with the 6900 series, specifically from crossfire advances coinciding with overhaulted frame-buffer.

Respectively disagree, man. I've watched quadfire scale brilliantly with 2560x1600x3. It's not only feasible, but quite fast. Running 5x1 portrait lifts my resolution to 11.2 megapixel (I adjust the correction often enough, but that seems to be typical) and more often than not maxing out relevant details with 2xMSAAA & 4xMSAA. A few of the exceptions are Crysis & Warhead, but overwhelmingly the rule's exception. Never encountered a case of not being able to maximize all texture, shader, particle, et al. settings with 16xAF.
