build for friend!

A friend of mine wants me to build him a pc. He is willing to pay more than the system i have listed. He will be using the system for personal use, light gaming ( if any) and internet. I told him he didnt need a powerful system for his needs, yet he insists on a powerful system! So i want to meet his needs as well as give him a little room to grow, when his computer skill/ knowledge increase!

So here are a few ideas i have!

points im flexble on +
cpu - willing to downgrade to i5 (still want at least quad core)

gpu- willing to downgrade? any graphics card is overkill for this build>> but want him to have high/mid leval graphics

motherboard- not big on SB mobo,s is the one i selected good? I still want sli/overclocking ability, even if we buy a SB non k. He may change his mind and want to overclock later.

Ok any fine tuning will be great.... I wont budge on the gpu, as he insists on a graphics card so no onboard video!

I also wont budge on the hdd. i want him to have a good solid boot/storage hdd( since we wont be going ssd)

Ok,

Get rid of the i7 without fail. You can't overclock at all on a non-K sandybridge processor. So he won't be able to "change his mind" unless he replaces his current CPU.

That MSI board is fine, but i'd personally go with the P8P67 board, it's about the same price

I'd probably go with the GSkill Ripjaws as well

Get rifd of the WD black and go with 2x1TB Samsung F3's. This way you can split his data from his system drive for a bit of extra protection. Samsungs are better than the blacks :-p, also quicker on the 1tb side.

If he needs something for light gaming then go with the GTX550.

Also, that's miles too much for a case. Go with something around the $70 - $90 mark. You don't need to drop $150 on a case when you're not likely to be overclocking. Apart from that, the case is fugly.

Comps

EDIT - IF that's an 850w PSU get rid of it, you can run this rig on a good quality 550w PSU. Go with the TX650V2 if you really want but even that is overkill.

Go for an Asus/Gigabyte mobo, go for an I5 23/4/500 (Non K, I don't think he'll be OC'ing), get a Coolermaster 690ii/Storm Scout, the sniper is fugly, and way overpriced. Light gaming, you could get a cheapo 5770.

thanks for the input so far! + rep for all helpfull post!

Problem is ,me and my friends, all have big atx high end cases ,and mods so he will not be happy with a low end case (trust me) He wanted a Antec 1200 like my friends. I figure a cpu upgrade is better than a cpu+ mobo upgrade, but i do think a 2500k might be a good idea ( for the price) I actually picked a gtx550 at first, still debating this part!
He may never overclock, but i dont want to tell him down the road that he spent $1500-$2000 and needs to spend more to overclock. Since he wants more system than he needs , i guess i should cover all the bases!

Im a fan of black-hdd's, and they are better for boot drive anyway!

No, really they aren't,

especially using a 2Tb drive for a system drive. The 2TB drives were designed for storage, not booting in mind. You really 100% want to have 2 1TB drives, this would be both quicker, and more resiliant than a single 2tb drive.

If he wants to go with a performance case that doesn't look like it's be designed by a 2 year old with crayons then go with something like the SIGMA AEGIS or the LIAN LI Lancool PC-K58W

Just get the 2500k with the CM212+ just to make sure though.

Comps

EDIT - also, he's spending $1500 amd you've NOT spec'ed him in an SSD?

Dude, it's not bashing, you wanted input and i'm being honest, there are better cases out there and you're wasting money on a case that isn't going to be used to its potential, and the rep doesn't bother me man ;-)
