Thinking about a tablet

Thread Starter
I have a lot of TV shows and such on my PC. Its great when Im in the lounge room as I can watch it on my TV. But I'd like to watch some of these in bed. I'm thinking a tablet and an external hard drive is the go.

I was originally thinking of the Notion Ink but the reviews dont seem great and availability is limited. What would you guys recomend for this purpose? The only other things it would be used for is basic web surfing, OCN and other forums.

Cheers.

Depends on your budget... The Asus Eee Pad Transformer is out, hard to find in stock, but worth waiting on from what I have read. $399 10" Android 3.0, Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, 512 Ram etc....

For your basic needs I'd say a mid range 10" would be perfect, you can find one for around $250.... But if you end up liking it and tinkering with it you may regret not getting a better one...

Archos - 101 Internet Tablet $294 -$30 discount = $264

Just saw your location... Scratch the pricing, but the specs should be about equal.. The Arcos 101 is decent mid range for basic stuff...

Thanks for the tips. Im thinking with the exchange the way it is and pricing in Australia I'd most likely save $$ by importing from the US. I think I'll hold out till the end of May and see if I can get my hands on a transformer. From everything I have seen also this seems to be the Tablet of the moment.

the Eee transformer definitely is the way to go currently, the problem will be getting one because you can't find them anywhere in the US. I say wait for the supply to catch up and grab one off amazon, if I remember correctly they do shipping to here

They certainly do and depending on work commitments I might just get it shipped to a friend in the US and pick it up when Im there. Save a few bucks.

Honestly android is the way to go no matter which brand you decide. I have the xoom and I am very happy and extremely impressed so far. The only thing that needs some tweaking is the performance. It can be bit laggy at times but it will be fixed after a couple big updates, maybe to 3.1 or 3.2.

I have an HP slate 500 and I love it, but it might be a little overkill for movies in bed, haha. Have you looked into the motorola xoom or the galaxy pad? I had the galaxy pad for a little while and liked it, but I wanted the windows features. For movie viewing either of those should be fine!

Hmmm seems like both the Galaxy and the Zoom lack USB ports which rules them out for me. I need to be able to plug my 500GB portable WD drive into the device to access all the media Im looking for.

Thanks for the ideas though keep em comming.

Either wait for Toshiba's tablet, which has full USB, or hook your external up to a router and just stream...

I would wait for windows 8 tablets. With any of the windows tablets now it just doesn't function great for touchscreen. Android tablets are ok but price is gonna come down alot. Plus these are companies first crack at them. They are going to get alot better.
