Reference design vs non-reference design

Thread Starter
When it comes to custom cooling:

Why is it that its only 100% sure, that a custom cooler, only will fit on a reference design?
My friends says if you get a non-reference design, theres a chance that the custom cooler wont fit on it.

Is this any true?

Depends of the card. Most custom coolers are designed for reference design.

Yeah, kinda. Non-Reference can have custom made PCB's so aftermarket coolers may not fit properly. But 9/10 they do fit, Check if your card is reference by seeing if the Nvidia/AMD Logo is on the card near the PCI-E slot.
You should check and what cooler are you planning to get - some water blocks fit and to non-referance design cards.

Hi and thanks for reply.

Its because I have been looking at the strongest GTX580 out there, since I wont be doing any overclocking.
And I came to this card here:
-MSI GTX580 lightning

And yes I know that its standard cooler is pretty good. But I wanna take it 1 step forward, and install a "Accelero Xtreme Plus" on it.

But my friends says I cant, since its a non-reference card.

Otherwise I'll just get the "MSI GTX580 Twin Frozr II/OC"

Which is a reference design. And should fit the Xtreme Plus without any worries.

Why do you need a Lightning card if you plan on overclocking only on air? A reference design will be fine for you. Or you could get a GTX 580 DCII, which has a pretty good 3 Slot cooler.

If you're going to replace the cooler why not just get a reference 580 and save about $50-$100, it'll be much cheaper than getting a non-reference 580 and adding an aftermarket cooler.

I agree that the extra expense of a Lightning edition card is a waste of money if you're gonna slap an AXP on it.
For that matter, save the most money by buying any brand of vanilla reference GTX 580, whatever is the best deal, along with the AXP.

However, having said that, you may be able to get one of these:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814187127
Nice card, eh?

Edit:
Just saw the mir, so it's $529.99 after the mir.
For a GTX 580, factory-equipped with an AXP.
I'd say that's a darn good deal!

Edit:
Too late!
Just saw that the op last posted here 4 weeks ago, and he has an MSI GTX 580 in his sig.
