need build advice for digital audio workstation - Page 2

multi track audio recording is a memory and hard drive hog depending on bit rate. I built and researched some for local bands. Also silence is golden in this build and the money needs to go in the sound card which will depend on the software you are using ie: pro tools, etc. good luck and keep some Excedrin on standby.

Yea I figure 8GB will be a good starting point memory wise -- later will go to 16GB and I've already got a 80GB SSD for the OS and programs and a 500GB for files (later will probably grab a couple 1TBs) As far as the soundcard goes I've got an M-audio Fast Track- Pro that I really like. And your right some very quiet fans will definitely be a necessity.

It's the ICs on the 2x4GB ECO, they don't overclock nearly as well as other ECO kits. To me I'm not too sure if it's worth the price tag since there are many other 1600 CL8 2x4GB kits for somewhat cheaper. If the low voltage interests you, go ahead, but RAM power consumption doesn't usually make a big difference.

I recently have been researching this as well, and agree that the bulk of your money should go into the sound card. Quad core will be fine and 8GB is a great start. I do not know about you, but I personally would not overclock. I would keep everything at stock just so that you won't have a potential issue mid mix. Also, I would just go for an Athlon vs Phenom. The L3 cache barely does anything for encoding/transcoding. The extra money saved can go towards other components.

Take the cpu from build 1 and the motherboard from build 2 some better cl 1600 ram, power supply and your good. I'm sure that the IGP will be sufficient for you needs right now. You can always upgrade to a different gpu later.
