An unusual situation

Thread Starter
Alright, I've had it and I am going to ask for some help from the best place I know to ask. I built my computer about a year ago (or rebuilt maybe?) with a 955 BE, Gigabyte 790X Am3 board and 4GBs of mushkin ram. It has run ok since I got the memory figured out, which is to say it need the voltage in bios set to 1.9v and timings at 9-9-9-27 instead of it being at 7-7-7-21 like its supposed to be. Oh and it has never booted to windows at the advertised 1600MHz I just leave it at 1333.

Now that you are filled in lets fast forward to the here and now. I have off and on gotten a wild hair and have tried to overclock this setup, but always to no avail. Even a 1 MHz ref clock bump results in no windows. I am stumped as to why, seeing as that the machine has always run smoothly when I don't mess with it(no BSODs, but maybe the occasional hang-up). I have even re-flashed to the latest bios a couple of times. Oh and one more thing: I have never gotten any "stress test" programs (i.e. Prime95, Linpack etc.) to run on my computer except for one called S&M.

What I need help with here is maybe a check list of things to try or tests to run to see what is wrong with my setup. I don't want to upgrade or replace anything if I can avoid it, but I do feel the system starting to age a bit and I want a little bump in speed. It would also be great to find out how to properly run windows memory test so that it shows me the results, as I have never gotten it to do so.
Well thanks in advance for any help or advice given, aside from maybe the kind that advises me to set fire to it or involves any kind of destruction.

RMA that RAM!
From 1600 CL7 1.*v to 1333 CL9 1.9v, this RAM is *utterly damaged*. Whatever issues you have, change that RAM, you can expect nothing but instability from it.
Even the cheapest Kingston/Corsair 1333 CL9 1.5v *will* run better, because it can do CL7 and still be 1.5v.

Thanks for the idea there, but its way too late for an RMA since I bought back in late July or early August of last year. I'll see if my brother will let me borrow his memory for further testing.

What
1333 CL9 1.9V
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy yyyyy above what you ever need for 1333 CL9 (1.5V and no more), you sir have defective RAM sadly

Then again... what is your BIOS you are using on the 790XT?

Yes it would appear that way. Got my brother's CL9 1333 mushkin out of his comp and am currently running at 3.6GHz tested stable with a short S&M run going to try for more then figure out what ram to order. Any suggestions on what kind to get I want something CL7 1600 and am partial to G. Skill atm as that has worked phenomenally for the last 2 builds I have done(an Athlon II x2 for my mum running CL8 1066 and some DDR2 in my grandparents rig). I have a budget for around $60 shipped and need 4GBs. Thanks again guys.

It depends on the chips the sticks have and also on the IMC revision.
If your modules are double sided it may be hard for your CPU to work with them at their rated speed.
Older AMD CPU revisions do high speed with 2 banks of memory taken not 4 as 2 double sided sticks would take.
Also keep in mind many modules have nice timings ,but at high voltages.I mean the vendor tells you it can do X Mhz speed but at a 2,1+ volts for DDR2 (factory overclock).
This means that those modules don t do the hyped/marketed speed "naturally" but beeing overclocked ,as JEDEC says memory should need only 1,8-1,9V (for DDR2).
Also the IMC needs a little more voltage than the default to behave properly at high speeds.
And there are also memory modules made for Intel timing wise ,improper SPD tRFC timing.

Thanks for the reply on the memory I guess I'll look for lower voltage over the tighter timings.

Currently posting from my brother's minecraft server since I am testing the proc and memory on his rig. Well after more testing with the memory and even fiddling with the cores (turning off cores 1-3 then back on one at a time) I think I figured out that this proc just will not overclock stably. Yes even on my brother's mobo it seems that it doesn't like seeing over 1.4V(won't post at all and no surprise) and it hits the same 3.6GHz wall. Restarting his rig now to see if my memory works on his board, which is some kinda MSI weirdness with an 870 NB 750SB???

Oh and its been a struggle to get the proc to post on his board it absolutely refuses to run S&M and only runs Prime95 for about 15mins at the stock 3.2GHz then stops with an error. More on this after I swap the memory.

EDIT: Anybody know anything about these modules or am I looking for love in all the wrong places again?

All you have to do is to test the ram at the specified voltage for those modules ,as it is stated on the vendor product page (nevermind the voltages from my previous post as they are for DDR2 ).
Also you can set the NB IMC voltage at 1,3 Volts as well ,to help the memory controller a little.
If it eronates in Metest and Prime all you have ot do is RMA them or replace them.
I would go for some Corsair AMD tested memory.
MSI mobos are not extraordinary when it comes to memory speed ,i don t know why exactly ,so test them in your mobo.
