x4 955 - Page 2

The average game won't show a large benefit moving from one Phenom to another as most are limited to only using two cores. There will still be an increase as other tasks can be moved to the other cores, but the increase will not be huge. You'd probably do better to either not upgrade, or wait to upgrade to another architecture, like Sandy Bridge, or the soon to be released Bulldozer.

Yes, some games *will* show phenomenal increases. Battlefield Bad Company 2 is one of these, and the number of games that will give you an increase is set to go up as time goes on and more games start to properly utilise multiple cores.

If you do things other than play games and want to see improvements then yes, it will give you a large increase. Otherwise, I'd consider saving my money.

Now I know that I use to play World of Warcraft(til Cataclysm killed it) I would get 34-45FPS with my Phenom 9100e at 1.8ghz on a HD5770 VGA card_ Switching over to a Phenom II 955x4 I was getting constant 60FPS =]

So from my experience the difference was big =]
but you also went from 1.8ghz to 3.2ghz- thats a 1.4ghz increase. of course your frame rate went up. duh. lol

Thread Starter
Thanks for the replies guys. I was considering the 965 but overclocking the 955 would give me the same results I'd imagine. I read this on a forum,

"955s do not overclock the same as a 965 generally speaking. They use a binning process so the most stable chips are sold as 965s, therefore they usually overclock a little further."

Reply to that: "AMD are long past doing that now, the Phenom II manufacturing range is mature enough now for them not to have to bother with such nonsense. I've seen plenty of 965's that wont OC higher than a 955....its just luck of the draw, rather than any calculated plan on AMD's part."

I guess I'm a little disappointed that the general concensus here (which I trust) is that I may not see the fps improvement I was expecting. I know people who play F1 2010 with amazing fps at high settings and high res, so unless they're using the latest and greatest i7, I don't know what it takes to get in the region of 60/70/80fps on certain games. I mean, I'll have a good quadcore, I've just got a brand new 5850, 4 GB ram, surely I should see major improvements as I know many games are cpu dependent. I will just add that this 955 I'm getting is the 125w version, but I don't know what the advantage is of that? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...=6&subcat=1943

the 125w 955 is a c3,the c2 version runs hotter so of course it could be an issue overclocking it with your average air cooling solution.
