Creative Alchemy.. is it for 5.1 only?

Thread Starter
I recently added Counter Strike: Source to Alchemy. Everything sounds much louder. Are there any specific settings anyone uses for it?

Also, can I use stereo headphone settings with Alchemy? Everything I found about Alchemy mentions 5.1 speaker setup, like changing the Windows speaker setup and game sound settings. Maybe it's only for surround sound? I don't wanna f up my audio settings.

Is Alchemy only for surround sound?

Dolby is surround sound. But its a surround emulation on a stereo setup. What speakers do you use and how's it connected to your pc.

I use Ad700 stereo headphones and they're connected to the headphone jack on my titanium hd soundcard.

Ok so I'll need Alchemy to use it on the game I want, cool.

I just enabled Dolby, and it automatically changed my settings to 5.1 in Windows and X-fi console. I'm sure this is what it's supposed to do in order to emulate the surround sound. What about in-game? Do I leave the option as headphones or do I set it to 5.1 as well?

Also, which option should I select from these two (stereo xpand/surround) and how far should the slider be?

Thanks for your help guys.

Alchemy is not "for doing Dolby" as Spoony has said.

Alchemy does two things:
1)
it restores hardware acceleration for games under Vista or Windows 7. DirectSound was hardware accelerated by your sound card under Windows 98, ME, and XP which took some of the load off your CPU.

Windows Vista and Windows 7 have a new audio stack and Direct Sound is done in software. Alchemy takes those old Direct Sound hardware calls and converts them to OpenAL. OpenAL is hardware accelerated under Vista/Windows 7.
2)
Alchemy restores to games EAX which is "Environmental Audio eXtensions".

EAX adds reverb, occlusion, and more realistic sounding effects to games that were created specifcally with EAX in mind. If you had a sound card that did not support EAX, the game would simply sound flatter and less genuine.

I have no clue what the other poster, Spoony, is going on about "Dolby. " Creative Labs does not license Dolby anything....C-Media and Realtek license Dolby for Dolby Headphone and ProLogic usage with their respective sound chipsets.

Thanks for the informative post smile.gif now I finally know what alchemy is lol. I still wonder why everything sounds louder in the games I enabled it for though.

Idk about the Dolby part though because my Titanium HD has the option to enable it, which I just did. The Creative Console just changed on me, also making Windows 5.1 and adding the stereo Xpand and surround options. Do you know which would sound better for games? Or is it preference?

The Titanium HD has the ability to encode the 5.1 channels into DD or DTS for streaming into your receiver.

I have a Titanium HD. If you are in game mode, you will get the most out of the card for gaming. Entertainment mode is geared towards movies, and Audio Creation Mode is best for critical listening of movies.

If you are in gaming mode, you can activate CMSS-3d which is for upmixing headphone sounds and giving a surround feel to stereo sources. I do not like Stereo Expand I prefer Stereo Surround, but that is only my preference.

If you play legacy games, you can use Alchemy to restore the hardware acceleration to older games, and for that you need to be in gaming mode.
