Overclocking i7 950 to 4.0Ghz

post #1 of 11

So I've seen a ton of overclocking guides on this site and many others but I keep coming to the problem of specificity. People give general rules and tips, but it's either very vague or it's very specific but for a processor that I do not have. My main goal is to get my 950 to 4.0Ghz without melting it. I'm currently at 3.6 with reasonable temps (stats below). Everything that I've read until this point said that 3.6 was fairly easy to get but going higher gets tricky. Any and all help would be appreciated.

i7 950 @ 3.6Ghz
Bclock = 150
Multiplier = 24x (23 with Turbo)
Stable in Prime95
Ambient core temps = 40 - 36 - 41 - 38
Max load core temps = 73 - 72 - 71 - 68
1.225 CPU Volts
DRAM at 1506 Mhz

Hello there and welcome to OCN. Check out this guide: http://www.techreaction.net/2010/09/07/3-step-overclocking-guide-bloomfield-and-gulftown/ .

I would say you should go higher with the BCLK and lower the multiplier a little (I'm 21*190). I think 3.6 is rather easy and honestly think your vcore is high for that but maybe you got really unlucky, do you have your vcore set to auto/are you sure you need that much to be stable at 3.6 GHz? Just watch temps and you'll be fine, that guide is a very helpful resource. Remember chips that need less volts for higher clocks often run hotter so if you need a lot of vcore it doesn't mean you will get worse temps than me at 1.22v.

i know how to get you to your 4ghz but your temps will be an issue, at the moment your max load core temps are at the highest point you should take them for 24/7 use. if you want to try running 4ghz and your core temps are going over 80*C then dont run it for hours on end.

drop your Multiplier down to 23 and have turbo off
set your BCLK (Bclock) to 174
go into voltage options and if you have Vdroop control turn that off
set your CPU Vcore to 1.300v
set QPI PLL to 1.275v
set Dram voltage to 1.65v
save and exit

That should easily give you a stable 4ghz right off. if your not stable at this id suggest better cooling

Thanks for that. I still am not sure about the multiplier and the Bclock thing. I mean, there are several combinations to get the speed that I want, but what are the differences in having a high Bclock and a high multiplier? Also, what sort of volts should I be using for 3.6, 3.8, and 4.0?
post #5 of 11
High BCLK you overclock the other components aswell, high multiplier it's only the CPU getting overclocked. i.e RAM, QPI, uncore etc.

I personally like the higher multiplier with lower BCLK.

For example mine is set to 175 x 23 = 4.025GHz.

I was running 174 for a while but it would never validate as 4GHz, it would also show as 3999.99GHz. mad.gif

'Qpi/dram core voltage' can be set very low if you keep your ramspeed at 1600mhz max..uclk frequency and qpi link data rate at the lowest. cpu voltage you need to check for yourself.

The other volt settings can many times be set low if you try and keep your multi high (21/23) and busspeed relatively low (uclk frequency max 4000Mhz and qpi link data rate max 8000 mt/s). vdimm usally at around default.

The i7 950 may need a lot of qpi voltage to keep stable so try and up it if you are having troubles.

Thank you guys for all of the help. I didn't expect so many people to be willing and ready to give so much information, haha.

So, after doing some messing around, I found out why my temps were so high. My heatsink has been eating quite a large amount of dust. I didn't think this would be a problem, but one of my fans died, not allowing any dust to leave out of the back. Idle temps are ~ 37-35-38-33 and max load is now 63-62-61-58.
And just to be sure, how does 1.2375 volts sound for 23x157?
