4870x2 + 500W PSU

Hey everyone,

Used to be a member here ages ago, but I thought I would re-join the community redface.gif

I have managed to get hold of a lovely XFX 4870X2 2GB on ebay for a good deal. My problem is that I didn't really think things through in regards to the power consumption of this beast...

I currently have an Antec Earthwatts 500W, which has brilliant reviews and is a solid 500W unit. However, I'm not sure whether to try out the 4870x2 on this PSU or just wait a few weeks until I get hold of a more powerful PSU?

I know that I will get a 650W+ PSU in the near future, but any ideas on how the 500W will manage with the 4870x2? Any risk of damage etc?

I believe 4870x2 pulls around 430-440W. So I'd say you'll be pushing it. Will probably work, but your PSU will be under some heavy strain.

I have been meaning to get a nice modular PSU anyway, can't stand the jumble of cables anymore in my case!

It should be fine since you have a non power hungry dual core.

But I wouldn't run any stress testing programs.

Phaedrus did a Q9550+4870 CF test and only managed to pull max~450w(IBT+Furmark)

You'll be pushing it, but it will be more than ok.

4870x2 pulls 430-440 watt including the whole system.

The card itself is no more than 250 watts.

How is it physically possible for the 4870x2 to pull 430-440 watts...
pcie slot supplies 75 watts
6 pin supplies 75 watts max
the 8 pin can supply 150 watts max....

TDP of that card is around 230watts, no way it'll pull that much... to the OP you'll be fine if the PSU your using is the one in your sig...

In the worst case scenario, all I can do is cause my PC to shut down if the power draw is too much?

I'll only be using it on the 500W PSU for a few weeks until I get paid to buy a 700W+ PSU.

As the PSU you own has OCP yes the worse that will happen is your PC will shut down.
