Remedy CEO says he won’t shed a tear if retail dies

An all-encompassing shift to digital distribution would be a forwards step for the games industry, the boss of Finnish studio Remedy has declared.
Remedy CEO Matias Myllyrinne believes a digital-only games ecosystem would help all in the industry, aside from one group he appears to have no sympathy for.
“The sooner we go digital as an industry, the better for everybody," he told Edge.
"Better for consumers, better for the developers and publishers.

Yeah all digital sounds like a GREAT idea. (Sigh idiot). So what if we went all digital with someone like Sony. Look at Sony now they got hacked & the service has been down for weeks so that means the people who bought digital cant even play anything. So having a retail copy in my opinion is a better deal.

As long as in return we get our dedicated servers back I'm fine with games going digital distribution only. But the way it is now publishers are just trying to bond gamers to being online as much as possible because they think it's an effective way to counter piracy.

When the best method against piracy is simply making a good game instead of Battlefield Extreme Modern Warfare 6 Black Ops Clone #2094.

Not really. With a few exceptions, games that were downloaded from PSN can still be played, even if you're not signed in. Obviously nobody can play online, but that goes for the boxed games too.

The real problem would be with a service like OnLive, which would make playing anything impossible if it goes down or you lose your connection.
