Best GPU Upgrade for BF3?

Thread Starter
So I plan on playing Battlefield 3 and I want the the most eye candy my system can handle for a GPU+PSU upgrade.

I'm wondering how bottlenecked my mobo/CPU are in terms of getting an MSI 6950 w/ a TFIII and if trying to unlock & overclock it would be pushing it. If so, what are my options in a GPU upgrade? Obviously whatever goes in is going to require a PSU upgrade which is fine because I have someone I plan to hand this one off to who has an older system that it's perfect for (and desperately needs a new PSU since they're running the one THIS one replaced! LOL)

In terms of overclocking my CPU...

I've gotten 3.95Ghz stable with SmartOC with RAM speed reduction which seems to be the experience others have had with this mobo but I'm convinced it's because I haven't taken the time to find the right settings. The mobo and RAM are rated to 1600mhz but setting that fails. All that is for another topic sometime but just kind of letting you know where I'm at with OC so far. Also, CPU will not unlock.

CPU/mobo upgrades aren't possible for at least a year but part of the reason I'm wanting this 6950 is so I can crossfire after grabbing a Bulldozer to stay budget but up to date. Next on the budget is an SSD & mobile platform (Dell Inspiron DUO - wish it or something similar came with a Neo :/) and all that after some other unrelated expenses so I'm looking at tackling BF3 as best as possible while trying to stay future proof along that agenda.

Any comments/suggestions welcome on all aspects as long as they favor AMD. Thanks in advance!

best advice......wait!

Wait for new cards and wait for the reviews! I am getting the itch myself to start upgrading for BF3 but the smartest thing to do is to hold tight as long as possible

The TFIII 6950 is not a reference card, and therefore will not unlock.

Look at the visiontek, sapphire, or xfx, reference cards.

Not as much overclocking headroom with the stock cooler, but you still get 6970 performance for $80 less.

Probably something like a 6970.

If BF3 is anything like BC2, it will probably run better on AMD stuff for some reason.

Doesn't have to be reference to unlock. There are TFIII 6950s out there that are unlocking.

And the best answer to your question is to wait. Buying a card right now for the intention of playing BF3 with it is stupid.

Right, Brand, Cooler etc. are tenative. 2Gb is mandatory. Purchase date will depend on the best summer deals.

I've seen reports of it unlocking but wouldn't mind grabbing one with cheap fans and applying an aftermarket cooler. The budget here is to do it right!

The QUESTION....is will my Phenom Tricore and 770 chipset limit the power of this GPU? Also, should I be considering NB cooler?

I'm asking all this in preperation of what prices to watch. not what to buy right now. I'm crazy, not stupid! biggrin.gif

Maybe not computers, but it will in my wallet. Also, it's more tongue-in-cheek self mocking the fact that I will *not* be buying nvidia. Thanks but not happening, don't bother suggesting it.
