Best GPU Upgrade for BF3? - Page 3

Since Battlefield 3 is being built from the ground up for each console including PC, I feel that it will be much more optimized than other titles including Bad Company 2. I think that a single HD 5870/6950 or GTX 470/560 will be able to run the game at high settings at 1080p. For 2560x1600 and multi-monitor resolutions you'll probably want at least a Crossfire/SLI solution.

Especially if DICE/EA is aiming this game for a more mainstream crowd like COD gamers and not Crysis/Metro 2033 gamers then I'd expect the hardware requirements to be less extreme. The majority of gamers they are aiming at still only sit on dual-cores with a ~9800GTX (DX10) equivalent card according to Steam.

[quote=RichardS;13435853]I have a 740BE and as X3 at stock BFBC2 won't fully utilize a single 5770 unless i turn the aa/af up at 1080p. Overclocked as X4 still need to turn aa/af up to get close to max utilization out of the cards, though the highest oc it'll go as a quad is just over 3.5.

So far you have not mentioned your 720 unlocking. Does it unlock to X4 and if so how high can you clock it?
Yes I did. No it doesn't

If you are looking for something now, the sapphire 5850 extreme is a good deal on a plenty powerful card to pair with your 720. The 6850/460 would be another good pairing in the ~150 range. A 5870/6950 would also be a good step up for over 200. I wouldn't spend 350-500 on a 570/6970/580; if you have that much for upgrades I'd start considering a new cpu.
$300+$100 (GPU/PSU) is my budget at the moment. That is plus a Win7 Retail license *PUKES*

I could upgrade my CPU to a 1100T because my board supports 140w TDP but it'll be seriously pushing it and it's kind of a gamble if the 770 will even support it.

They do mean to allow these people to play but the suggestion is that all of the eye candy @60FPS in DX11 stable will only be supported by a 580. I wnat as much of that as possible in the range I'm speculating and want to know what my prior cheapness is gonna nerf the 6950 for.

I don't need top tier preformance for the game but I'm wondering what I'm geting myself into with a 6950 on this cpu/mobo combo.

Specifically how much of the 6950 I'm wasting with CPU bottleneck and how much my mobo is going to bottlneck a PIIx6 if I eventually upgrade to that which i may do if the blacks drop to ~$100 @ bulldozer release.

I highly doubt that only a GTX 580 will be able to play the game with all eye candy at 60 FPS. You have to remember the GTX 580 is doing that in the Pre-Alpha/Alpha unoptimized build of the game. Once the final build of the game comes out with plenty of optimizations then I'd expect that even a GTX 560 would be able to play with all the eye candy on at 50-60 FPS at 1080p.

I have 720BE (also not unlocking) at 3,6ghz and NB at 2,4ghz and my 6950 gave me a huge performance boost for games such as BC2. I would recommend the card for your platform but recommending it for BF3 would be foolish as no one really knows how heavy that game is going to be.

Right, the mention of BF3 is really the hypothetical maxing of the 6950.

I'm pretty sold on the 6950 any way it goes. I'm really wondering how my system to struggle with the game though. I'm starting to think I shoudl just plan on grabbing coolers for the NB & SB when I order the GPU so that I'm prepared for OCing them if I do get CPU bottlenecked.

The CPU will limit you, I got two 6970s to play the game on max for myself @ 1080p.

You dont really need a cooler for the SB and NB is quite fine as it is, depending on the mobo. And you wont be overclocking SB, just NB. And you should really OC NB to 2,4-2,8ghz, it'll give you a huge performance boost over stock NB In other words, I dont think you need a cooler to OC NB.

Edit: Lol, after reading this again after a day I think I just wrote the most repetetive sentence ever. That's what you get when you're writing messages on a smartphone from work

Put your crystal ball away, the game isn't out yet.

Successful Troll is a Successful Troll!

If my CPu was limiting me why would he suggest more GPU?

Either he doesn't know what he's talking about or he doesn't care. As you suggest...it's both!
