Old Dell p4 keeps freezing

I'm trying to fix a Dell dimension 2400 and after and during the reinstall it would just freeze and the hdd activity light would stop. I would have to restart and then it would work again for another 30 mins or so and then freeze again.

This morning when I turned it on it won't load up windows. Since it froze and I had to force reboot, the windows did not shut down properly screen comes up. What ever option I pick the hdd activity light comes on for about 1 second and then nothing. The screen stays black and that's it.

I've ran hd tune error scan and got nothing, changed the ram and it's the same. I even unhooked the cd drives so that the hdd was the only thing hooked up.

I'm out of ideas and looking for anything. I can't check the temps because they're is no temp sensor that I can see in bios or any monitoring programs. But the heatsinks don't feel hot at all

Most dells ive repaired from that era, have bad capacitors or bad PSUs. Check your PSU fan and see if it still moves. Ive seen lots of dells where that PSU fan fails and the PSU starts to die. Also use another PSU to check. If you want can also reapply some TIM on the CPU.

Thanks, I'll give that a shot. I got an extra PSU around I'll give a shot.

I think we had some of these where I used to work. Eventually they all died because of bad capacitors. They started freezing and shutting down, and eventually got to the point where you'd press the power and the fans would turn on full blast but they wouldn't POST. You can take a look at the caps and see if they are leaking. I know that some people sell kits of caps for these PCs that you can solder in yourself.

If heatsinks dont feel hot after a minute being turned on, could be the cpu is dead.
Have you tried removing HDD and ram sticks to check if motherboard makes beeping sound? that would indicate the board is alive.
