Can i re-use my home premium disk?

Thread Starter
i building a new system and i was wondering if i have to buy a new win 7 pack or can i just reuse the same one from my old build on this one.
if you bought a retail copy as long as it's off the old machine you can install it on another machine. if you bought an oem copy windows (microsoft) considers it registered to the motherboard; meaning a new copy is needed.

If you purchased a retail copy of Windows 7 and you are removing it from the old build, you can move it to the new system. You can't install it on both systems at the same time. You also can NOT do this legally if you purchased an OEM copy of Windows.

Wrong. Windows 7 Home Premium Retail allows you to install the OS on up to three different systems. OEM allows you to install it on only one system, but the license can be moved to another motherboard. For this, you first need to remove the OS from the Hard Drive, install it on the new machine, call Microsoft, and they'll activate it.

And I say it because I have experience with OEM myself and with Retail for clients.

Not legally. Though Microsoft will do it for you, it is not strictly speaking legal. One Windows key is only supposed to be used on one system, and OEM is only allowed to be tied to one motherboard.

Yes, legally. It's only on one machine. Did you forget about where I wrote "first, delete it from the machine"? And everyone I've asked has said this is legal. I asked a Microsoft rep myself and he said it was fine as long as it was installed in one and only one system but that first you needed to uninstall it from the other system, install it on the new one, and then call them so they'd activate. And I did so, telling them it was OEM, and they activated it. Why would Microsoft do something that was illegal?

Answer me this.

Good to know. What do you tell Microsoft when you need to transfer and activate an OEM edition of Windows on another computer? Just curious if I get some crazy representative on the phone who may not be as knowledgeable and tell me it can't be done?

I have OEM windows 7 for my HTPC that I am wanting to part out, and I'd hate to buy another copy of Windows if I don't have to.
