My must have free programs for every computer (usage dependent):

Utilities

7Zip
Process Explorer
Autoruns
CPU-Z & GPU-Z
HW Monitor
HD Tune
Auslogics Disk Defrag
Revo Uninstaller
Blue Screen Viewer
WinDbg (not the whole SDK)
Fraps (if you're a gamer)
TrueCrypt
PowerToys (only if you're still on XP)

Image Tools

GIMP
Picasa
Image Resizer

Web Content

Java
Adobe Flash
Microsoft Silverlight
QuickTime Light (not just for web content)

Web / Internet Apps

Chrome (or FireFox, Opera, anything to supplement IE)
Thunderbird Email
Skype
Ventrilo / Mumble (if you're a gamer or collaborator)
PeerBlock
Utorrent
Digsby

Office & Document Essentials

Adobe Acrobat Reader
Libre Office (or Open Office)
Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer

Antivirus & Malware Prevention

Microsoft Security Essentials
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
Comodo Firewall (if you need extra protection)

Media, Entertainment & Games

MPC-HC or VLC (I prefer MPC-HC over VLC)
Steam

CD/DVD / Content Creation Tools

DVD Decrypter
ImgBurn
Magic ISO

* There are other softwares available that do other things but I prefer these for the the above-average (knowledgeable but not tech oriented) computer user. Below are paid-for programs I also recommend if people want to purchase them (not categorized):

AnyDVD HD
Nero 7 (or newer versions)
PowerDVD 9 (or newer versions)
ConvertXtoDVD (4.0 or newer for multi-core systems)
Adobe Photoshop Elements (version 7 or newer)
Adobe CreatePDF
Microsoft Office 2003 (or newer, I really like 2007)
ESET Nod32 Antivirus (excellent virus prevention software)

How is MPC-HC compared to VLC?
Slightly higher quality because it uses the native codecs, VLC uses a rendering method that doesn't require you to download codecs but it also slightly reduces quality.

I prefer MPC-HC over VLC. Some people don't care about slightly less quality, so they install VLC so they don't have to worry about codecs.

I just install CCCP which includes MPC-HC.. that will play anything and it's not bloaty like all other codec packs.

I've faced a few problems with CCCP(especially with audio). I went back to Klite codec.
