Best Price/Performance High-End CPU Cooler? - Page 2

Thread Starter
Thanks again Xristo. Unless someone else can convince me otherwise I guess I'll be going with the Antec Kuhler H2O 920 and lap it. It supposedly comes with really good fans, unlike the H70. I'm not going with the H70 because of the fans not being as good and from what I hear the CPU block that comes with the Antec is better.

Also anybody who's going to try to convince me to water cool I'm only going to go water cooling if I can cool my CPU, NB, and two GPUs for less than $225. I'm getting an Antec 1200 case and don't mind using some of the fans to cool my hard drives and SB (water cooling them seems like a complete waste to me).

Atennisplayah, really? Under full load? I don't know if it's just that the Nehalem i5s run really cool, but I haven't seen any non-water cooling set up beat that at 4 GHz... that includes the NH-D14 and Kuhler 920.

Silver arrow +1 if you have a case that will fit it.

Its ridiculously quiet and is one of the best 3 air coolers on the market (nh-d14 and archon being the other 2). Beats the corsair h50/60/70. Comes with some of the best fans available. (ty-140)'s.

I love mine.

Isn't it possible to add a third fan to the Silver Arrow? I bet a lapped Silver Arrow with three fans would destroy a Kuhler.

stop hating on the h70 , hyper 212+ is a cheap piece of rubbish .. thats a waste of money . The base isnt even flat on those things , makes me wonder how anyone gets good temps at all with such an uneven surface ? may look cool , thats about it .

Lap the base of the h70 until its smooth , use some mx2 or ic diamond paste and it will blow any of those coolers to smitherines .

i guarentee it .

I get 62c 100% load @ 4.2ghz / 1.408v / HT and turbo enabled .. on my i7 870 using a lapped h50 .

I would never downgrade to an aircooler , all it takes is abit of effort to unleash the beast within those hydro coolers .. they are crap out of the box i admit , corsair never went to those extra lengths to lap the base for us , or supply us with semi decent thermal paste instead of that horrid shin etsu pad it comes with .. rubbish .

and yes that run was done in cool ambients , but still impressive for a lightly modified h50 ..
Dont know what this nonsence is about...D-14 and Silver Arrow beat the HXX coolers..the onlything your going to get that is better than a Silver Arrow/D-14 right now is a Full Water Loop. I would realy like to know where your basing your information off of. Read more in Air Cooling Thread it get talked about like 4-5 times a week, some one pipe's up with a HXX/Antec is better than silver arrow, yet NO review supports this, at all. sorry to burst the bubble.

you can add a 3rd fan to the silver arrow

@the OP I would stay away form the Hybrid water loops..tiny tiny radiators. kinda like puting a honda civic radiator on a full blown drag car, If you realy want water, get a full loop. There are tons of coolers in the $60-ish market, but you get what you pay for. The Cooler master hyper 212 is a solid cooler for the price but you can get better..
Silver Arrow/D-14
Megahelms with AP-15's push pull
Archon
Frio
mugen2(kinda like a Hyper 212+ rival)

I can also say that BradlyW just swapped out from an H70 to a Silver Arrow and is getting better temps. Mind you the hybrids are decent coolers, they just have a time and place, there are far better coolers for pushing your OC.

A fellow forum member(and buddy in real life) has a lapped HXX cooler with a 150CFM (AP-31's) on his, my silver arrow beats it out.

It all depends on what the prices are in australia. the Silver Arrow usually is a bit cheaper than the D14 and the Prolimatech Genesis and comes with two excellent fans, so that would be my recommendation.
if you want to go a bit cheaper i would suggest either the Scythe Mugen 2 or the Scythe Ninja 3. Theyare not nickleplated and the build quality is not on par with the aforementioned high end coolers, but the performance is excellent for the money.
The Prolimatech Armageddon is also relatively cheap and performs excellent with two prolimatech vortex fans...

I have a ThermalTake Frio. My CPU (1090t) with stock clocks (3.2GHz) and turbo boost turned off (on a crappy motherboard temporarily), has temperatures of 18-20c idle and 28c under load. Ambient in the room is 60-70F. Using arctic silver 5. I have never done water cooling, but I know enough to know that water cooling isn't going to beat this by very much, even when over clocking. From what I can see, water cooling is more for those who have high end GPUs, than it is for CPUs. You can most likely get your desired temperatures, at your desired clock, on your CPU, with air cooling. But with your GPU, you probably won't be able to get your desired temperatures at stock clocks with air cooling.

H70 better than D14? Surely I must be reading this wrong? That's not opinion, that's wrong.

If you want just a great cooler and beable to get some nice temps at a reasonable price-i dont care what anyone says, the Antec 620 is very hard to beat at 69.99 shipped free. I get great temps with my push pull set up. And it looks good and easy to install. If you want extreem cooler temps than go custom water block. And the 920 beats or matches anything in its class. Simple go read reveiws and what others have acheived with theres. But yes Couple other air coolers are great too-but i like the room the Antecs leave and the temps.
