Just upgraded to a 580 :)

Thread Starter
Never upgraded a GPU before. Do I need to uninstall my current drivers, power off, take out current gpu and pop in the 580?

I really dont know what to expect. I hope I don't get let down. My 285 seemed good but a lot of games are coming out and that just came out that I want to "enjoy".

Anything else I need to know.

I had a XFX nvidia gtx 285 now I will be running

yea that's pretty much what you have to do. you can use a driver cleaner program to be sure the drivers are completely gone if you want but when i did mine manually that worked fine. i'd recommend downloading the new drivers first and saving them on your desktop to make it nice and convenient when you get up and running again.

The basic steps:
1. Download the latest driver and have it ready on the desktop (for convenience)
2. Uninstall old driver (or, this step can be skipped as newer Nvidia drivers have a 'clean install' option)
3. Power down and remove all cords/cables from card. I would even remove the power cable to the PSU (to ensure no power to the motherboard)
4. Remove card
5. Insert new card and attach all cables/cords
6. Power up
7. Install new driver

When switching between nvidia cards, I just pop new one in and restart afterwords. If previously installed drivers are too old, I do the same, but then install new drivers after first reboot.

Should i Leave my 285 in and just instal the 580 as well?

Because from what I read, I could use the 285 as a dedicated phsyx card.

Or i guess I can always ebay my current gpu for $100 or so.

If you play games that has physX then yes leave it in. And just select it as the dedicated physX card. If not then keep it for a spare/backup. Or pass it along to someone at a goo deal that needs it.
Like others said, just pop it in and restart. Download the latest drivers and only do a sweep if you have problems. The GTX 580 is the fastest card out, expect it to play anything on 1080p maxed no problem for a while to come.

Keep the 285 alongside for another monitor, F@H, PhysX, etc. It's still very capable, but if your pressed for $, sell it. Could use the leftover to get some aftermarket air cooling (unless it will go underwater).
