Every single person who prefers a discreet soundcard is mistaking distortion for improvement?

Just the ones who don't have hi-fi or audio creation mode + bit-matched playback enabled.

If he prefers the sound with software enhancements then it's better for him.

What about those people who do have it set in that manner? You have argued that in no case is there a difference.

My titanium HD is on audio creation mode w/ bit-matched playback. My music isn't being distorted, but there is damn well no difference in the sound compared to my ud3r's ALC889, much less an $112 difference.

Do you have any way of connecting the output of the onboard/card to your card? I'd like to see some measurements proving there's no difference. Make everyone eat their words. I'll be happy to admit I'm wrong if you can prove it.

I pretend from time to time that I hear new things from the Titanium HD, then I switch over to the ALC889. Lo an behold every sound is accounted for. I then switch back to the HD thinking maybe there was something different about the way it was played back, but it sounds exactly the same. Then I double check and get the same results.

I want you to connect the output of your onboard to the input of your soundcard and measure it using http://audio.rightmark.org/products/rmaa.shtml

Then connect the output of the soundcard to the soundcard input and repeat the measurement. Then we can see if they really are performing the same. I'd actually be very interested in seeing how close they really are.
