With a different PSU attached to the mobo (8 pin and 24 pin) and power to the GPU, The rig booted and got to the 'no hard drive attached' screen; all good as the HDs weren't attached to the power supply.
Thanks for all the replies. Will rep later but I'm on my iPod and it's a nightmare to do it on this!
Opinions on Corsair TX 850w? Is it modular?
Wow, you've been extremely lucky you didn't lose any components. Well, now you know the importance of a good Power Supply. Even if you're gonna SLI and add four more Hard Drives and tons of other peripherals, an 850W unit is gonna be seriously overkill. For the future and beyond, I recommend you get a high-quality 750W unit. The ones I'd recommend for you are the Corsair TX-750 v2
and the Corsair HX-750
. The internals are pretty much identical. The differences come in terms of the TX750 not being modular and costing $105 and the HX750 being fully modular and costing $140. The HX750 also has a 7 year warranty, while the TX750 has a 5 year warranty. They both have very similar internals, though, so it's not really worth it. Whether modular cabling is worth the extra depends on your needs.
As a general rule: TX series is not modular, but the HX/AX series is.
