What would you do with an old computer? - Page 2

That's an interesting question, as I have an old Dell Dimension 4100. It was one of my earlier PCs. It's not as old as yours, but that old Pentium III doesn't seem as fast for even basic use anymore. I didn't know what to do with it, so I've been storing it since I could bring myself to just send it off. That decision rewarded me when my sister's PC went bad a few weeks back. It's slow, but it's getting her online schooling done temporarily.

A file server is probably your best bet.

Don't expect to be able to encode on-the-fly with a PC built in 1997 though. lol

I second this. I still got an ancient Pentium III 500MHz, 128MB RAM, 8GB HDD with Windows 2K Pro rig still kicking around with 2 PCI cards running a load of 160GB-250GB IDE drives for basic backups. I suggest the OP does the same, it wouldn't be of much use for anything else.

As others have said, you can use it as some network storage. Then again, 1997 is a long time ago and PCs back then were pretty different than now.

You may find that more modern software won't work on it. If you are gonna install an OS, best to use Linux as Windows can be a bit heavy at times.

You said you have four so I would donate 3 of those bad boys to charity and keep the last one to do what ever you would like.

First Experiment to know what it can do.

If it is a P3 then a simple processor upgrade(check ebay for good deals) will help it gain enough processing power to run near modern OS & software.

Or use it as a File server.

I am rebuilding my Celeron 1.1Ghz Socket 370 Rig for basic Downloading & FTP purposes with bare minimum budget. I find it an interesting project. This system has worked for more than 9 Years after which the mobo died.

Specs:
Celeron 1.1Ghz tualatin Socket 370.
RAM 2x256MB SD RAM
HDD WD Caviar Blue 500GB
Lan card or Wifi USB adapter, SATA PCI card, USB 2.0 addon card.
Cheap cabinet
nVidia 5200 PCI (from a friend who has no use for it)

That's it.

Will try to acquire Windows ThinPC or will use Windows 7 Home Basic x86 key that I won or Use linux

Basically the whole point is check what that thing can do before donating/ throwing because It might have some use or the other.
