I'd have a look at an athlon x4 or a phenom X3/4 and maybe some new memory.

Not sure if that'll work on your motherboard. Is it AM2 or AM2+?

Yea I know I need some new memory I bought 2gb a couple months ago but my motherboard wouldn't take it so I had to return it and i've been holding off since pretty soon after my graphics started messing up.

Sorry but IDK if my motherboard is AM2 or AM2+ I don't know how to find out all I got is this spec page from their website: http://www.dfi.com/portal/CM/cmprodu...rmal&mode=view

Personally i would share out that budget for multiple parts, rather then 1 expensive gpu, maybe a Radeon 5670
Then get a new cpu/board & ram, and your pretty much set again for another while.

Well i'm trying to keep my cost down as much as possible, as much I would love to have a whole new build I was pefectly happy with how my computer ran. It was working flawlessly all these years until this graphics issue so i'd probably prefer to just replace the video card.

I found my original new egg order from back in the day so I have all my pieces of my computer now it looks like

this is the video card I have: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814131006
this is the motherboard:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813136152
this is the memory:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231047
and this is the cpu:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103546

Idk if that changes anything. but thanks for all the help.

Could you please explain why besides in your own opinion the gtx 550 is supposedly so well suited for this build?

Scroll down and you will see a grx 460 for less than $100. How does that not make it worthwhile to have over a $150 550?

B grade stock, way to fail...

I went with the 550 since it's A. New B. not B grade stock and C. I did tell him if he could get a 460 cheaper then to go for that

Also http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-078-_-Product

$135 and NEW!!!! with a full warranty, not the crappy 90 days you proposed.

Small update for this

i5 2500k

4Gb of memory (Gskill)

MSI-P67S-B3 Motherboard

PNY GTX 550 GPU

Total $529.96

Now this is a complete overhaul and is dependant on your PSU. If you have a half decent PSU this will happily run on a 500W

Please find out what make and model of PSU you have and we'll see if it'll run ok on it.

If you're not a heavy gamer get yourself like a GTX 460 card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121390 something like this would be a good choice without breaking the bank. Then in the future if you wanna upgrade your computer you can with this video card still in the mix.

It seems like you would rather keep what you have and just make it play nice again. I don't blame you, it gets expensive rebuilding a computer and if it's not necessary then why do it?

A 550 is not a good buy. It is essentially an updated GTS 450 but it's priced higher than some 460 models (all of which are significantly faster).

The cheapest and most viable upgrade imo would be a 768mb 460
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-058-_-Product

$95 after rebate, with better performance than any 550 Ti.

His budget was $500 for his upgrade, which whilst isn't a massive amount of money but will get him an epic upgrade from his existing platform.

Ok well awesome thanks for all the help, I got to decide now what I want to do. That new build looks very tempting but i'm probably just gonna stick with a new card for now since I don't have the time right currently to be rebuilding my computer I just need to be able to use it again.
