In the link below they did use an HD 5870 and HD 5890. They're getting the same performance from an E8400 (OC'd to 4.4GHz) and a Q9550 (OC'd to 3.7 GHz) as an OC'd Core i7 920. They used DDR-2 RAM at 988 on the E8400 so RAM really shouldn't be bottle necking either.

Pretty much just confirms that throwing money at a PC build on cutting edge hardware really is just a waste of money.

The hardware is only as good as the software thats using it.

Lets face it, alot of software doesn't use 2+ year old hardware to it's proper potential.

You can see my sig rig and I still noticed a big difference going sli 460s instead of single. The cpu bottlenecks importance is overexaggerated unless you have a seriously slow cpu

I use about 40-50% of my GTX460 in BC2 and GTA4.
Though in Far Cry 2 its goes anywhere from 50-80%

I highly recommend getting a new gpu and then trying to oc that q6600 a good bit.
Thanks for the advice.

Thing is, with the cheap memory I have I don't think I can get much more out of the Q6600 without getting some performance stuff - I'm not sure I want to put money into something I can't later move to a new machine. Also, I only have a basic cooler, so I would really need to spend money on that too.

Given that's the case, and I won't get any faster than 2.6ghz, would you still say it's worth it? Sounds like I should still get a noticeable hike even if I can't O/C the CPU?

Also, how power hungry are newer cards compared to the 8800GTX? I'm running a 650w corsair TX which is probably close to being maxed out. Would I be able to keep one of the 8800's for PhysX, get a new card (like the 560ti) and not have my PSU melt?

If your ram is rated for 800mhz then you should be able to get 3.6ghz on that cpu with very little effort. Depending on your revision (B3 or G0) will determine what your temps with that stock intel heatsink.

Also, you could use a 8800gtx for physx with a new gpu. Although, you sli 8800gtx setup is faster then a 560ti setup by itself. So you wouldn't really be upgrading much. If you want a good solid upgrade I'd suggest a gtx 470/480, yea can find them on OCN second hand for cheap. (I just got my gtx 480 for 220$)

For the power concern you shouldn't have any issues with a tx650 with it. I have my gpu psu powering my tec and my gtx 480 and it doesn't have any issues with it, and it's a 450w gpu psu.

Sorry to question, but I'm slightly confused now. Granted the 480 is a better card, but I didn't think there was that much difference between the 560ti and the 480 (and this link to the latest benchmarks at Toms Hardware would seem to confirm that? - http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/2...ndex,2674.html )

You saw a big difference when you went from Tri-sli 9800gtx to a single 480, but you reckon a dual sli 8800gtx is actually better than a single 560ti? And I was just lining up the purchase

I will assure you there is a good difference between a gtx 560 ti and a gtx 480.

Think about it like this: The 8800gtx is about the same as a 9800gtx+ just a lil bit slower clock speeds but the performance is within a few percent.

2 8800gtx's are about the same as a just gtx 285 performance wise.

Now the gtx 560ti is slightly better then a gtx 285 in performance.

The main thing making the gtx 560 ti have a slighter edge in performance is more vram. And after looking at some more reviews your sli 8800 gtx's are slower then a gtx 560 ti. But I just don't think it's justifiable to "upgrade" with for a 5-10% increase in fps.

When I upgrade I want at least a 50% or greater performance increase otherwise the money spent on it just isn't justifiable to me. That is unless you just have money to blow and then at that point go for it.

But in your case I would definitely finding a second-hand gtx 470/480 to get some amazing results and a well worthwhile upgrade.

Thanks. Sounds like I might hang on a bit then and wait for 480-like performance at 560ti-like prices -I'm a bit leery of buying second-hand. You're right in saying that an upgrade like this should give more than a 5 - 10% performance increase - that's exactly what I'm trying to avoid.

I know the Q6600 is normally a great overclocker, but if you look on this site and others, you'll find that it is notoriously band when combined with my Asus P5Ne-sli mobo unfortunately. Lots of people have tried and failed, with only the occasional success. Certainly, it's my experience that it is rock solid at 2.6 but if I try and up the FSB by even 1 extra, it fails to even boot.

Do you up the voltage on the cpu any?

Also, I bought my gtx 480 for less then a gtx 560 ti brand new. I bought my gtx 480 for 220$.

If you're going to be second hand from someone on OCN, just make sure they have a good trader rating and that is someone that appears to be a decent person to do business with. I've bought several things from people on OCN and only once had an issue with someone, and that issue was resolved quickly.

I understand the precaution of buying from a 3rd party online. But I do find OCN to be a relatively safe place to do business, specially if the user is active in the community and also has a good rating.

I'm probably going to be doing some OC testing soon. I'll just see what kind of performance each level of overclocking gets you. Will report back soon

Agreed. OCN, thanks to their rep + trader rating system is actually a lot more reliable IMO than places like ebay.
