In general I don't trust their methodology, and in particular their vary enough from others that I have no confidence in them.

Fair enough. Good reasoning.
They're not the only reviews I'm reading of course, but theirs are always the first to show up from search engines and they have big lists that I can pull from.

I'm still having trouble finding or settling on a cooler of a decent size.
The Flex seems to be getting mixed reviews. At least on AM3...

Not quite yet. Some things have come up lately, so I'll have to wait a bit.
I guess i am going to go with that cooler. It seems to fit my needs and budget quite well.

Well I ended up going with a Cooler Master Hyper N520.
I was near a TigerDirect location at the time , and that seemed the best option that they had available. No wait for shipping; no paying for shipping either!
So far it's doing what I need it to do. Had a 10°C improvement on my load temps! Starting to OC now, and I think I may be able to hit around 3.6GHz safely.

I think I may have been a little too generous with the thermal compound. I tried the "grain of rice" approach, but also smeared on what was left on the tip of the syringe. Could that be too much? I also wanted to see if there was a way to get better downward pressure on the CPU. The mounting setup on this doesn't really make it easy to get that. I thought maybe if I didn't use the rubber washers with it, but I'm not sure if that'd be okay to do.

Alright, so I reseated the heatsink, and reapplied the TIM. Just using the stock stuff for now. Lost another 3°. I think I may want to get better TIM, and perhaps better fans for the HS.
I haven't bought any case fans yet, though I found a couple scrap ones around the house that I'm testing different setups with.

I did go ahead and try the one intake fan just above and in front of the cooler. I only saw a 1° drop from no fan at all.

One of the reasons I recommend just going with a top cooler: you'll end up wasting your money on a mediocre cooler, and end up buying that top one after all.

Live and learn, I suppose. This at least gets me a start, and it's a heck of alot better than stock.
It wasn't all that easy to find one that fit my setup the way I wanted it to. This one doesn't even block DIMMs 1 or 2. That seems to be a common issue. If I do decide to look for one in the future I'll know to get pretty much exactly the same dimensions.

You could replace your RAM heatsinks with sensible low-profile generic models. One thing I learned after two sets of Ripjaws: even Ripjaws are too tall. So for my third set of RAM I bought G.Skill low profile sticks. Now I'll never have to worry about fitting a cpu heatsink.
