Some money to spend..

post #1 of 12
Thread Starter
Hi people,
i've got some spare money that i would like to spend on my rig:

i7 940 @2.93
nvidia Geforce GTX 480
Asus P6T deluxe
WDC WD1500ADFD 10k rpm
3 Gigz of A data 1333
Xp 32 bit SP3
That's about the most important stuff i presume. It's for gaming purposes.
What would be my bottleneck + what stuff could i get for around 200$?

I Was thinking about getting the Revodrive SSD?
Kind regards,Ben

If i were you, i would get a new 6GB triple channel ram kit + 64bit Win 7 + a Vertex 3 Max Iops SSD. Revo is fast but i think you can save money on that and put that on the Ram + 64bit Win 7 is a better move. 3GB is really not enough nowadays imo.

e.g.:
Corsair 6gb 3x2gb Xms3-1600 Mhz --> sets me back around =80$
Windows 7 --> 100 $
Vertex 3 Max Iops SSD --> 280 $
grand total of 460$. I doubt that my local shop will give me a 50% discount so i can pay 200$.
That vertex is more expensive than the revodrive, why prefer that?

You need to get with the now and get some Win7 on that thing. SSDs still aren't worth the trouble, time and cost for gaming.
+1 for OS + Ram

Actually I have a new suggestion. You could grab yourself a new heat sink. I think the one that OCN has been pimping lately is the Cooler Master Hyper 212+. This way you could jack up your CPU to 3.50GHz with your current RAM. Let's not lie to ourselves. If you're not doing anything intensive, 3GB @ 1333MHz is just enough (if you have good timings). Plus, even if you did grab 3GB of extra RAM, it wouldn't do anything for you because you never actually use that much. You would definitely reap the benefits of an extra 600MHz from your CPU though.

I actually allready have that cooler.
Think i could crank the cpu up a notch?(we'll offcourse that's a different ballgame.)
It does seem that most parts cost up to 50% more in europe, which offcourse sucks.
If i would oc the cpu, what would be my next bottleneck?
I might get my hands on a windows 7, next in line is RAM or SSD?
Ram i might be going for the corsair Corsair Dominator 6GB 1600 MHz DDR3?
SSD is still wide open, as i do play different games it's handy to have some spare room. Anyone have a good Money to space+speed ratio SSD in mind?

ditch the revo drive for the love of god, and pick up a 60gb or 120gb crucial c300, still the king imo .. great random 4k speeds, that or the vertex 3 ssd imo..
