RAM upgrade question

Thread Starter
Hi, time has come to upgrade my RAM. My mobo is ASUS P5K/EPU with two yellow and two black RAM slots. Currently, I have two identical modules 2x1GB Corsair XMS2 DHX CM2X1024-6400C5DHX dual channel kit DDR2-800 5-5-5-18 (the kit has part number TWIN2x2048-6400C5DHX) in the yellow slots, working in dual channel mode.
I want to populate the other channel too - the black slots. Should I buy exactly same modules as these in the first channel, or I can install any other DDR2-800 modules?

For best compatibility you should use the exact same sticks.

However I have never done that, I recently ran a set of 2133 9-11-9 DDR3 with a set of 1600 7-8-7 DDR3, have to preset speeds and timings that both sticks will run at, but other than that you should be fine.

Is it OK if the second dual channel kit is from same manufacturer, speed, voltage, latency and even product line, BUT DIFFERENT SIZE ?
My current kit is 2X1GB Corsair TWIN2x2048-6400C5DHX
Is it OK to buy the following kit as a second one: 2x2GB Corsair TWIN2x4096-6400C5DHX
?

Is it a problem that both the old and the new memory are not listed in the QVL list of the motherboard?

Generally, no. Most ram is the same, the QVL is a bit of pat-on-the-back marketing. It is guaranteed to work though.

So here is the situation:
1. At first I put all modules - 2x1+2x2. Memtest showed errors. Tried frequencies 800MHz and 667MHz and enabled/disabled legacy USB support. Errors again. Tried changing slots in any combinations. Errors again. And sometimes PC starts but has no picture nor beep.
2. Then I put only the new 2x2 modules. Again errors and and again sometimes PC starts but has no picture nor beep. LOOL? In the Corsair site they are listed as compatible for my mainboard. Why is that?
3. When I put only one of the new modules there are no errors.
Now I am wit the old 2x1 kit.
Why it's so hard to upgrade the RAM !?
