What to do with broken Canon 50mm f/1.8?

The damn thing broke when I went to Europe a few summers ago and I have been dealing with it since then. It fell on the ground from about 2ft high and it broke in half. I was able to put (ahem, jam) it back together, but now its autofocusing is really loud and not very effective. It is also not nearly as sharp as it used to be. I opened it up again and found that a little plastic gear controlling the AF had a chunk out of it.

Repair it? Ditch it for a f/1.4?

Well obviously repair it, but if you don't want it you could always use it for art.

Use it as a MF lens?

I'm worried that the repair cost will be more than what I paid for it, though (80 bucks new).

Also, I see what you did thar.

judging from the damage... repairing it may cost as much as that lens... probably just get a new one or MF...

It would probably cost more to fix than what it's worth. Whenever someone asks for a repair estimate at POTN, they usually say to expect at least a $200 bill. Hell, I had a rear rubber gasket replaced on a 70-200 f/4 and it cost $190.

E-mail Canon and they can give you a ballpark.

Holy hell. 10 bucks worth of black RTV and an exacto knife and you're done. I'm going to experiment with that this weekend, actually.
