Any Point In Upgrading from i7 920 to i7 950?

Thread Starter
I am selling a computer with a new overclocked i7 950 in @ 4ghz. I don't seem to be getting the offers that I want for it, so am considering just taking the best bits out and upgrading my everyday computer. Then If I get less for it, I have at least upgraded my computer too and it will sting less.

My i7 920 in my everyday computer already runs at 3.8, so is there any real point in me changing to the 950, aside from the fact it's new and the extra .2ghz? I am basically wondering if there is anything obvious I am missing, not knowing the differences with the architecture in every model.

Thanks

Its easy to get the 950 over 4.0ghz, good solid base.

normaly a 920 overclocks better then 950 and 920s have better memory imc but its really a toss up you would need to test each chip and see which can run on less vcore.

Depends on the voltages. What can the 950 do for voltage? 1.40v for 4 GHz vs 1.18v for 4 GHz is a HUGE amount of heat difference.
I OC'ed my 950 to 4.2GHz with little effort on a P6T Deluxe v2. Vcore was only at 1.325V. I think a 950 will OC higher than a 920 and with less effort.

Ah yes, thanks guys I never thought about the heat issue. Until I boot my comp I couldn't tell you what vcore the 950 is at, that was done by overclockers uk so I never paid much attention.

But my i7 920 is at 1.232(i think cpu-z is off a little and it's more like 1.28) and at 3.8 ghz. It idles at mid 40's and maxes on general gaming, not prime etc at about 63c.

Nah, I wouldn't say it's really worth it.

At most you'll get a 3/400MHz higher overclock, you wont notice the difference. You'd be better off parting out the 950 system and selling it that way.

my 920 will do this on 1.325v... the only upgrade option for us with a 920 is a 970 when they are on sale...

There won't be much difference.

Only thing to consider is the multiplier.

920's multiplier max is 20 and the 950 is 23. Sometimes this helps if your motherboard is crap at BCLK overclocking.
