Thread Starter
Hello OCN! I've been a long time forum lurker mining the threads for useful data. After just completing my latest build and first overclock (that I set up), I've decided to join the community and maybe contribute.

My new build was inspired by those who were achieving 5.0+ GHz on their i5/i7 CPUs. So I got an i5-2500k (didn't see the point in an i7 for an additional $100) and dropped it into an ASUS P8P67 Deluxe (I really like having two network ports).

What surprised me the most was the ASUS autotuning that many suggested trying out first. I expected it to be overly conservative and go to maybe 4.0 GHz; however, after about 10 minutes it had settled on 4.6 GHz. I followed a few guides to try for more and was hoping to get 4.8 GHz. Although, at 4.8 GHz it crashed after about 2 hours of running Prime95. Stepping it down to 4.7 GHz brought longer term stability and a warm fuzzy feeling.

The massive Zalman cooler kept me from ever having to worry about temps. Instead it was my Vcore that became unstable at 4.8 GHz and above. I figure maybe I could tweak the settings some more to get a stable 4.8 GHz, but since this is really my first attempt at overclocking I'm not entirely sure what all the settings mean. As an aeronautical engineer by trade I am familiar with electrical controllers, but haven't really taken the time yet to fully understand all the complexities of modern CPU's.

Anyway, I suppose I could have just summarized this whole post into one word... "Hi"
