Please Help Me Very weird problem!

Hi guys/gals-

I'm not sure this is the right section but I'm having an Extremely weird problem and I hope you guys/gals can help!

The issue related to installing a new Capture Card (its PCIExpress).

The issue relates to my GTX 470 graphics card(s).

Here is the issue:

I had SLI GTX 470's installed and working perfectly with no issues.. I then installed the Capture Card and noticed that my screen was scrambling when my computer first boots (all of the information is scrambled every where until it gets to where it says "starting windows 7"). Once the computer boots up all of the way into Windows 7 64bit, then the display is perfect.

Here is what I what I have tried (some with success, others with failure).

I took the SLI configuration out and updated the one card (i even swapped the cards to make sure it wasn't just one acting up). So the configuration was (1) GTX 470 installed in the top 16x PCIEx slot and (1) AverTV Media Capture HD DVR card in one of the 8x PCIex slots.

For some reason having the Graphics Card in the PCIEx 16x slot and the capture card in an 8x slot causes this weird initial boot up scattering of information on my display.

I can put my graphics card in the 8x slot and the capture card in the 8x OR 16x slot and everything works perfectly... but obviously I want to find out this issue so I can run my SLI again with this capture card..

I have also exchanged the capture card with another brand new one (no difference), uninstalled drivers for both capture card and graphics card, then reinstalled .. no changes. etc etc.

I'm out of solutions.. Can someone please try to help me with this weird issue.. I posted here because I figured it is a hardware issue somewhere.

I wouldn't see why I couldn't run a graphics card in a 16x PCIEx slot with a capture card.. Its just a basic piece of hardware..

Thanks so much

Click User CP above and use Edit System to the left to fill in details of your system. Vital information such as what motherboard is used..etc are much needed.

I'm surprised with all of the knowledge here that no one can help..

What if I did SLI in both of the 8x slots and the capture card in the 16x slot? What would I lose compared to having the graphics card in the 16x slot? This is such a weird problem..

Performance loss will be around 2%, IIRC.

It is only 5 hours since you posted your system spec. Be patient (but I understand your eagerness to get the problem fixed).

I am looking into your case and will come back with suggestions, hopefully in a hour or two when I have something.

AverTV Media Capture HD DVR card is a PCIe x1 device.
Is there a reason why you do not use it in slot 6 (ie last slot) when the GTX470 SLI occupy slot 1 and slot 3.

Edit 1:
And when you did the switching of cards around the slots, did you do a clean uninstall/re-install of the drivers? Or, did you just switch the cards around?

I have 3 PCI-E slots on my MB. The top on is 16x, then it is directly followed by an 8x slot (very tight fit if I tried to put another Graphics card there). The next slot is a regular PCI slot (not express), then there is a 8x PCI-E slot. Finally, there is some little slot called a PCI-E but it only has two little black things? I'm not sure what kind of card goes in there? It is not a full length slot? but it says PCIe-X1_2?

EDIT: I tried the card in this last slot called PCIe-X1_2 and the PC hangs when it shows the Start Windows Symbol.. and if I try to boot into safe mode, the screen will go blank after it searches for drivers..

So, I currently have 1 card installed for the sake of trying to limit down potential problems.

My GTX 470 is in the Top 16x slot.

I have the Capture Card in the 2nd 8x slot (5th slot)

I clean and unistalled all of the drivers (I think I mentioned this in my first post possibly).

Thanks

1)
Use the following pic as reference to slot numbering.
The 'basic' setup is:-
1st GTX470 - slot 1
2nd GTX470 - slot 3 (Yes, the fit is tight but as the card is a dual slot card, it will fit. The airflow will be restricted. But for the purpose of diagnosis, this standard configuration should be tried.)
Capture card - slot 6

Install both graphics cards and make sure it the SLI works properly first.
Then, install the Capture card to slot 6.
Remember that you must not have 'Disabled' in the BIOS for the PCIEx1 slots.

2)
Regarding the uninstall/reinstall of drivers, what I meant was:- for each time you did the cards switching among slots, did you also do an uninstall/reinstall?

Did you see my edit in the above post? I installed the Capture Card in Slot 6 and it fixed the issue I was having, but now a new issue arose where Windows Hangs on the Windows Logo Screen right before its about to fully start.. and if I try to go to SAFE MODE then it will just go blank when loading?

Any ideas on the above issue?

And also, where is the PCI-E x1 BIOS settings at? I see a spot in the Onboard Device section and It says "PE5 Slot (PCIE x1) AUTO" and the same AUTO setting for PE4 SLOT (PCIE x1) AUTO
Are those the only BIOS settings for it? and do they need to be enabled ? or is AUTO okay?

Also, the SLI works in those slots supplied and I did uninstall and reinstall each time. The problem arises now when I put the Capture card into the 6 slot. With it in that slot, the computer boots up perfectly and has no weird scrambling of all of the information anymore.. but now it just hangs on the starting windows icon.. I have let it sit there for 25 minutes and its still hanging on it..

**I also took out the single GTX 470 and put it in an 8x Slot and the Capture Card in the 2nd slot (1st PCI-E x1 slot) and it still hangs on the Windows Logo "Starting Windows" Screen.

windfire- I hope you and any one else that is looking at this thread didn't give up on me.. I really want to get this card working in this PCI-E x1 slot (I tried the other one and it yielded the same hanging while trying to start windows on the logo screen).
