New laptop for college <$1,000 CAD

I'm trying to decide between a notebook and a netbook.

What is your maximum budget?
The cheaper the better, ideally under $1000CAD, but I will take any suggestion into consideration.

What country are you in?
Canada, as such, if I could get this laptop from NCIX or A-Power (they're local) or some Canadian retailer with free/cheap shipping, that would be great.

What will be the uses of this laptop?
Browsing the internet, watching movies, music, writing notes, and probably venturing into a few Linux distros. Mainly for use in college in September (taking an IT class) and to fool around on when I'm not at home.

Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you?
Brand is not an issue.

What screen size do you require?
At least 13".

What screen resolution do you require?
1280x800 is as small as I want to go.

Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay?
Used/etc. is fine if it's a good deal.

How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet)
At least 3 hours, hopefully.

What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings?
At most I might play League of Legends, Minecraft or Terraria when it comes out. Nothing intensive, and gaming isn't required, it's very low on the priority list.

What operating system do you need? (if any)
Windows 7 (I'm fine purchasing it separately).

Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.)
Thin, portable.

How much hard drive space do you need?
320GB minimum.

Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.)
Don't need anything special, just USB ports and audio jacks.

Is there anything else we need to know?
I like the portability, light weight and long battery life of netbooks, but the large screen/resolution of notebooks. Is there a middle ground here? Something like an MSI X-series with a bigger screen?

Been looking at these:
AMD Zacate E-350, 13.4" vs Intel C2D SU7300 + HD5430, 14.0"

How are MSI notebooks, quality/durability-wise?

How are AMD's Linux drivers? I know a year or two ago they were horrible, are they still that bad, or have they improved?
