Realtek ALC892 vs Asus Xonar DS

Hi guys!

My last motherboard had an Realtek chip and its sound quaility was horrible. Everything sounded like it was under water. I replaced it with an Asus Xonar DX, but sadly, after three years of use, it stopped working. I just finished ordering my new build, and while I am waiting for the parts to get here, I was wondering if it was worth getting a dedicated sound card instead of using my motherboards onboard. My motherboard, which is an MSI p67a-gd55, uses the Realtek ALC892 chip. I am wondering if the sound quaility of Realtek has gotten any better after three years and now is decent enough or would there be a noticable difference between it and the Asus Xonar DS?

realtek gone better................ehhhh i dont think so
i have the 889 witch is just a small step behind the 892 and it`s horrible
and since you owned a DX why going backwards to DS (buget maybe) confused.gif
for a new rig i recommend the Titainum HD for 150$ or Xonar STX or if you can still find one an Auzentech X-Fi Forte is just great
even again another DX is great

and yes any sound card will make noticeable difference from on-board but for the DS i dont think it`s THAT noticeable

Budget isn't a big concern, its just mostly I didn't want to spend $90 again on a DX when I already have =/ Are there any good cards in the $90 range besides the DX?

You can buy Xonar DS for $37(if not located in CA) shipped on eBay. (manufacturer refurbished)

currently the best 90~100$ cards are:
Creative X-Fi Titanium

HT Omega Striker
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829271001

and also the DX
but frankly in 90$ the best card you can get is the DX UNLESS you game a lot then the Titanium will create some difference

I'm wondering, is the Asus D1 the same as the DX but PCI instead of PCI-Express and not needing a berg connector?

The DX does need an extra source of power. You have to plug a berg pin floppy (4pin) power cable into the back of it. I think the card comes with a molex to berg adapter in the box. The reason for this is due to the PCI-E to PCI bridge on the card (It can't pass power through it just data.)

ops..... forget to answer the main question:p
yes the D1 and DX are the same
