I didn't want to pay $90 again for a sound card I had for three years already

Have you tried installing the realtek HD drivers?

If you got a receiver and your board got a digital output hook it up to you receiver where its Dac will be used which is 100 better than any soundcards Dac. Another cheap option that's if you got a receiver and want to get 5.1 thru digital in gaming aswell as other things is the Dts 610.
