High CPU Usage after start up

Thread Starter
Recently I have been having a slew of computer problems, and cannot find anything to fix them

The biggest one right now is that my CPU useage will be anywhere from 75-100%, and if I do not turn off my gadgets I can barely use anything on the computer. I noticed this starting to happen when running DCS: A-10C. While I was installing, uninstalling, and minimized from the game my computer would be slow. Yesterday I started the game and had to close immediately. After I close the game, my computer was bogging down so badly that I could not move the mouse smoothly. I have 8gb of ram, and only half of it is being used even with DCS open. On my processes (without anything running) there is nothing higher that 100,000k for memory, yet my CPU is still really high. Even if I restart the computer, I will still have the slow down.

On a side note, I don't know if this is related, but I have also started getting BSODs with a atikmdag.sys error. I have a full picture of the BSOD if needed. This happens in games and watching videos for a several minutes. I get graphical distortions like green boxes. This occurs with several of this years drivers as well.

I am using the computer in my sig, nothing has changed.

What programs are eating up the CPU usage?

As for the bluescreens, it could be either bad memory (run memtest86+ to check) or bad video card (run furmark to test for artifacts).

Have you ran msconfig and selected diagnostic startup. Or uncheck all of them and add one each time. And find out which one is giving the issue. Also check the event viewer for the errors and see what it says there.

For the gpu, you could try rolling back the driver and see if that helps or stress it out. Good luck

Start -> RUN
msconfig
Check the Startup tab. Uncheck unneeded programs from starting up. google the program first to be sure, before unchecking.

Make sure all your hardware is seated correctly in the motherboard. You may want to try some low level diagnostics.

Thank you for the replies. I will try that tomorrow and see what I can come up with.

As far as whats eating the CPU, I cannot find any programs in the task manager that are high enough to cause this much use. Ill take a picture if need be, I may be wrong.

I have rolled the Display Drivers back to 11.2, 11.3, 11.4, and as of a little while ago a full clean install of 11.5. I just played DCS for 3 hours and had no blue screen, but I never had a blue screen in DCS before.

Is there a free memory test? If it comes down to it I don't mind paying for software like that, and I might even be able to get it from school?

I ran furmark for about 12 minutes. Aside from making me sick, I did not see any artifacting or anything unusual. Ill load up Mount and Blade or something that I know has blue screened before just to make sure the 11.5 drivers didn't fix it. I did have stutters while running the test, and low around 25-30avg fps, but thats probably just my computer having a hard time with the demand right.

As I said I have tried the different drivers. I need to fully test 11.5 though. The problem did occur with 3 different sets of drivers though, but I also did not do a full cleaning of the drivers like I did for 11.5 I just uninstalled all the drivers and CCC stuff through the installer, and installed the next version.

With the diagnostic startup, am I going to have some sort of test running when I boot up, or am I supposed to go through and check everything? I haven't ever had to do that before, so I have no knowledge of how it works. By "unchecking all of them and adding one ea ch time" do you mean the items in the startup menu?

I did go through the start up tab and disable most things that I did not know about or install on my own. I'll admit, I didn't google some of the things but so far I haven't had a problem. I did this after I had the issues though, so it is not something that I disabled in start up causing this problem, as far as I know.

Thanks again guys.

Memtest86+ is free under the GPL license... what made you think it was a program you had to pay for?

I just did a 30 minute test and passed. It seemed to want to do a few more tests though, and I simply do not have time for that right now so it will have to wait until later tonight. How many tests does it run? I noticed it gave me the option to exit after the first test, but it still had more testing to do.

I have just again had the problem. The last two times that my computer has slowed down, I noticed that shutting down the gadgets helps lessen the lag on my computer, but the CPU useage will still remain high, and I still have a little bit of lag. I just loaded DCS up, and a few seconds after I opened multiplayer, the computer began to lag like it has been, but then my gadgets actually crashed. Could the be a relation to the gadgets and my problem? Turning the gadgets off does not fix the issue though, and I have had these running for a few months now with no problems.

Taken just after I closed DCS

I believe I have found the problem. Just loaded up DCS, and had to alt tab to load my X52 profile. When I loaded the profile my CPU useage jumped through the roof again. I cleared the profile, and it went back down to normal. That would explain why this only happens when I play DCS, however the profile does not load when I restart so that makes no sense to me still.

Thanks for the help, Im hoping this is the solution.
