Gaming performance 6 core vs 4 core

Thread Starter
Apologies if this has already been discussed but has anyone seen any benefits in gaming performance in paricular from using the intel 6 core/12 threads cpus over the 4 core/8 thread ones especially with HT off?

i get more performance when i have HT off in gaming mainly because games dont support more that 4 threads yet and HT halves your clock speeds kinda.

well atm sb 4 cores are running better then the hexacores "980s , 990x" .. but when games finally utilize more cores and enchance the directx engine then the more cores the better.. SB is to good to pass up on..

Running better??? You mean faster? Sb is all you need for games sure, and they run faster and bench good because there clocked faster! But they cant compete when it comes to muliti tasking and video rendering and stuff like that!! I say ivy bridge will be to good to pass up ( i hope)

Yeah ofcourse, but the price of SB to a Xtreme edition chip is unreal! to good to pass up.. Lets see what bulldozer has to offer and Ivy in 2012..

I had a similar question three years ago, but it's was between the 2-core E8400 vs the 4-core Q6600. Saw the benefit of going for more cores even at lower clockspeeds but this only applies to those who keep their systems for more than a year or so.
Still kickin'

I would still go for a quad ATM. I regret not buying a Q9500 back in 2008, but I really doubt that 6 cores will be necessary anytime soon. The only current hexas are high-end enthusiast products and no one would be able to make money on a game that requires 6 cores. When hexas become relevant (I predict they'll be needed in 5 years), the ones we have now will be obsolete and slow. The only real choice if you want a hexa that's faster than a quad SB, is the i7 980X / 990X and they're so expensive for what you get that the best choice ATM is a Sandy Bridge (for games). Really, when games come out that need 6 cores, the i7's we have now will be too slow. Go for what's fast in current games or wait for a IB / BD.

Most games don't run faster on 4 vs 2 much less 6 vs 4.
