It never made sense to have Skype on a phone - with the cost of data and poor fidelity, the phone is superior because a call is cheaper and better. Maybe in places were data is competitive, maybe, but then, is it really worth it when all Skype does is turn a voice into inintelligible gibberish, and where you get to repeat everything fifteen times because it cuts out or sounds wierd.

MS has a long tradition of poor acquisitions - they pay large and reap little, and this is pretty much the case once again.

Umm, you seem to be under the impression that people who use Skype make calls only...

Microsoft will continue to invest in and support Skype clients on non-Microsoft platforms.
They may not develop as quickly for Android but they would be foolish to tarnish the brand by discontinuing support.

Tell that to my sister and brother-in-law. When he was deployed to Afghanistan he was able to save assloads of cash by using skype VOIP via the base's wifi instead of calling on his cell service.

I wonder if MS has any neat tricks up their sleeves. Is Windows 8 ARM support confirmed? If so, doesn't this set them up for some pretty neat possibilities with Windows Phone 8 + Skype + Regular Windows 8 + Xbox Live + etc?

I'm not exactly holding my breath here, but just wishing for things that could be.

Oddly, I feel relieved. Mostly because of the rumor last week that Facebook was considering buying out Skype.
