Maybe more, Microsoft has ???? load of investments/subsidiaries/patents and ??? moar.

They basically the way they make money is a 100% sure thing. Operating systems are needed, and so far corporate services. There's no way Microsoft could not profit, even if they tried.

So the latest Linux version is STILL "2.2 Beta" and has been for as long as I can remember. I'll be shocked if Microsoft brings it to anywhere near feature parity.

Well I guess I won't be using skype on Linux any more.

Then again it was pretty much dropped by them anyway. I just wonder what MS has planned here.

Doesn't steam use some codec or whatever from skype? I have no idea how it all works, so does anyone know how steam can be affected by this? if there's any reason of course.

If I were a microsoft shareholder I'd be pissed right about now. I don't doubt that the Skype model can be better monetized, I just think think that Microsoft overpaid for it.

Think of it this way, if 405,000,000 skype accounts exist, microsoft paid $20.99 per account. If you eliminate half of those as inactive or as duplicates (someone who has a work account and a personal account) you're looking at a price of $42 per current customer. Now that's the price just for the privilege of running this currently money losing company. Now they're liable for the operating costs on top of it. I'm not too sure about this. The vast majority of people don't click on ads, let alone buy as a result... and if the software gets too bloated and full of ads then people can easily move to a competitor.

Of course, Microsoft might have more stodgy hopes for its new skype brand - perhaps it will be included in all future copies of windows and will deny its use to apple customers?

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_many_people_use_skype

Their usage data for daily users pegged it at 42.2 million daily users. That comes out to $201.42 per active daily user! You tell me, did Microsoft get ripped off? Where are they going to get $200 per active user?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skype

Quote:
The terms of the deal mean that for each [paying] Skype customer, Microsoft is paying about $1000. And on average, those customers are worth a profit of about $30, presuming most of Skype's income comes from subscriptions and call charges. That's a huge disparity.
