How good is this one?

I'm wondering wether this graphics card is good, mediocre or bad, for a laptop? I'm about to buy it anyways, just wondering.
The specs are:
Intel Core i5-480M processor 2,66 GHz
4 GB DDR3 ram 1066 MHz (1*4096 MB)
500 GB Sata harddisk 5400 rpm.
13,3" HD Glare skærm 1366*768
GeForce GT310M Grafik 1 GB GDDR3 ram
Swithable Intel HD Grafik (optimus)

Thanks!

It's a 310M. It's got 16 SPs. It's identical to the 8400 GS, considered an extremely-low-end card.

That said, it still blows Intel's IGP out of the water, and you could use it for old-school gaming, like Doom 3 and Quake 4.

So long as he doesn't plan on maxing out either. Medium/low-ish settings probably.

I'm thinking he could run Medium settings at 1024x600.

Or just run older games. He'd be able to max out Painkiller, which doesn't look much worse.

Without Antialiasing/Anisotropic filtering and some other effects, possibly.

Just saying that so long as he doesn't plan on using it for heavy gaming or just playing casually, some old games then he will be OK. Depends what he expects from it though.

I had expected a bit more, but yea, its not to be used for heavy gaming. I would like to play some a little high end games, but I've already got a desktop for that, sooo...

What other sort of games were you thinking of playing?

If you're only planning on using your desktop for gaming though, and not your laptop, it's fine. I would avoid using your laptop for any graphics heavy apps like games/benchmarks, as they do not have the airflow to handle it and can die very quickly as a result of this.

Well... Don't condem me for this, but I've been hooked by minecraft as so many others in this world (If you don't know what it is, check it out! (, and that's basically the game I'll play the most. Others than that, what i mostly play on laptops is WC3, or other relatively old games. Problem with minecraft is, that it is so ram intensive that my computer can't really handle it and is overheating if i don't put it in an elaveted position.

I must admit, that I would have liked to be able to play high-end on a laptop, but as I would rather have a laptop with a long batterytime, and i know that battery-endurance and performance don't quite go hand in hand, I'm content with it.

It will be decent for old RTS/4X type games, possibly newer ones at extremely low settings, depends on what you define acceptable performance to be.

Okay, let me correct you.

RAM doesn't cause overheating. I seriously doubt Minecraft would need more than 2GB, let alone 4GB.

A GT 310M would run Minecraft and WC3 just fine.

Lastly, why are you buying a laptop? A desktop would be much better for continuous use.
But if you really need the portability, you might want to build your own laptop @ XoticPC..
