Beats by Dre...Why not? - Page 12

Along with this image has come the general public's idea that they are in fact amazing sounding headphones, either from marketing them as Dr. Dre Studio quality or from shifting the "high quality" image to "high quality" sound.

Now put a video card in place of the beats. Say it's a 550 Ti with crazy fire decals and sexy design. Imagine this card get's a following outside of those "in the know" about these types of things, and the general public starts wanting the card for its image and supposed amazing performance (the general user probably would be comparing the card to onboard video, the iBuds in this Beats scenario).

Imagine what would happen to the person who just bought their awesome new 550 Ti and came here to OCN to post about it. They'd be run out of here in 2 seconds. Is the 550 Ti terrible? Not really, it can play modern games well. Is it a good value to those "in the know"? Not even remotely.

To those of us who enjoy audio, it's like we're protecting our hobby in a way. To see a headphone become so popular, largely due to the ignorance and "trend-following" ways of the general public, especially when there are much better options is very disheartening.
But at the same time, even a car enthusiast loves style and look. While some people only value car performance even if what you own is a rust bucket, or simply an unattractive car, some people like a good balance of performance and style, and the Pro's are the nicest looking headphones I have seen, period. Its not always a sound quality/price issue, and I'm not and no one else is claiming that it is.

If I came in here and asked for "a great pair of headphones that have sturdy build quality with a thick band, very decent sound quality, and look nice as well" you would still probably list the same headphones you would list if I'd just asked for the best sound quality per dollar.

Some people in this thread going as far as claiming that people are idiots for buying them are only applying their own preferences on other people. Just like in cars, some people don't care how the car looks as long as it goes fast. And others, like me, prefer the fast car that looks sleek as well, and I am glad to pay a premium for it. Am I an idiot?

What about people that throw LED lights into their PC cases, and spend money and time sleeving their cables and painting their cases, or spend extra money on a case that has a color scheme they prefer, etc. Are they idiots for not just buying the case thats the most functional? Was I an idiot for spending an extra 50 bucks on the nVidia edition of my case even though it added no extra functionality for my use?

If people want to shoot down the people claiming "they have the same sound quality as every other 400 pair of headphones" then go for it. But I think if don't mind sacrificing a little sound quality relative to comparably prices headphones, while still maintaining some damn surprisingly good sound quality(not NEARLY as bad as people in this thread have been claiming, and I have not been refuted yet, in reference to the Pro models, NOT THE STUDIOS), for a very sexy pair of headphones that have easily the best build quality for them, the Pro's are a great choice, why not? Who is anyone to knock that reasoning?

I agree with you that they look kinda good (definitely not ugly) but saying that the beats is the nicest headphone you have seen period? Have you checked out other headphones? Well I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

The Pro models, yes. I am not partial to the Studios, I think they look cheap and plastic to me, but the Pro's thick aluminum looks gorgeous to me, yeah. I really haven't found any other pair thats relatively high-end that I like nearly as much.

Sure if you want wand to spend $100,000 on a Corolla with a Ferrari body - how could I knock that reasoning

mmmm....
As I've said, the Beats can't even compete on looks. Y'know just listing headphones that sound better AND cheaper AND bass oriented. Notice how I restricted my criteria there.

Anyway, there is nothing the Beats do well for the price except for societal reasons.

Noise cancellation? In-ears isolate more and sound better. Even among ANC headphones, Bose isolates more. Also, if people actually had the option of not using the ANC, they wouyldn't use it

Sound? Muddy bass. It's not inheritly bad but more it's $80-$100 sound quality priced at $300. There are so many headphones that sound better and are cheaper in all sorts of sound signatures (bass heavy, balanced sound etc...)

Even Monster's very own Turbine series (Pro Copper, Pro Gold, Miles Davis, Turbine) sound better than the Beats and are cheaper.

looks?

the Alienware Ozma 5 and the rarer damn hard to find Alienware Ozma 7 l
aughs at it both on 'cool gangsta' looks and sound quality.

The Ozma5 is a rebranded Ultrasone HFI-550 (= HFI-580 = DJ1).

Looks? got carbon fibre?

Phiaton MS400

Audio Technica ESW-9

Similar sounding to the Beats, far cheaper but hell yes on camo!

Audio Technica Pro5 MS

As said, the Beats aren't even competing in the looks department. All the above look far classier and less tacky and sound better than Skullcandy as well....

If it's anything, I don't get a good impression of a lot of young Americans because of this hype tbh with their downright materialistic shallow lifestyle just to 'fit in' or in turn, conform to a view of 'unconformality'. e.g. Beats at the gym..oh come on man! It's so impractical in so many ways.

^^^

Sorry but all those look cheap and ugly to me. There is too much plastic on them and too much paint. Camouflage painted headphones? Really?

No, more like why would you spend money on a Hummer when you could spend a few thousand less and get a Jeep thats better for off-roading? Maybe you like the way the Hummer looks more?

You can play with analogies all day long but your analogies are flawed and aren't accurate. If you aren't going to give evidence to support your claim that the Beats Pro's are "corolla" performance compared to the "ferrari" performance that are your preferred brands, then you can't make that claim. I haven't seen any reviews that claim the difference is that stark.

Again, I am talking about the Pro's, NOT the Studios!

http://reviews.cnet.com/headphones/t...-34210289.html

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2374200,00.asp

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13645_3-20...?tag=mncol;txt

Many of the reviews I've read claim everything I'm claiming. Not that bad for the price point, but there are better options for sound quality, unless you are willing to sacrifice a bit for the style. Definitely not the "corolla versus ferrari" you are claiming, and such a claim makes you sound just as ignorant as the people claiming they are worthless.

Have you ever actually tried them with your own music, or are you still just judging from listening to some black eyes peas song on the demo at your local best buy once?

lol, the MS400 are carbon fiber inserts under a clear polycarbonate shell) and ES7 is wood shell....
Funny how all of them have better build quality than the Beats

A better (and more 'real life') analogy is ricer cars. Nothing inheritly wrong with ricer cars, but there's a reason why they are condemned / laughed at by real performance car hobbyists.

Yeah, thats cool, wood and carbon fiber. You could throw it on anything but that doesn't mean they actually result in a good looking pair of headphones. Again, when it comes down to it, those just aren't that attractive looking headphones, and they look extremely generic. Thats perfectly fine if you don't really care how they look or you personally like them, but thats just it, everyone has different preferences, tastes, and priorities.

And again, I disagree with you on the analogy. I would actually consider you the ricers and the people who pay for the looks the Ferrari owners. As the analogy goes, you guys are the ones claiming you can get the same performance for cheaper(modded civic for 30k versus overpriced luxury Ferrari that just has style for 250k). Its the ricers that always claim people that spend that much money on a car for "performance" are dumb when they could buy the same performance for much cheaper with a ricer.

and it's the real car hobbyists that laugh at the ricers because the ricers claim their mods 'boost preformance' and in turn buy gimmicky and overpriced 'preformance' parts when in real life, they don't. The ricers also tend to go on buyer justification rants more. But that said, most Ferraris bought aren't for performance, it's for shallow hollow status. Much like the Beats. Much like Harley Davidsons as well (ask any knowledgeable motorbike person).
