Beats by Dre...Why not? - Page 10

Please don't post senseless bashing of a product, if you think something is bad or that there is better available for the money then back up your point. The way ChineseKiwi has put his point across is a great example of how to put forward an opinion.

Any further posts with senseless flaming of a brand will be removed from the thread and will earn infractions.

it just depends how the phones make you feel.. if they make you feel good, the music will sound better, if you've got some Audio Technica on your head and listening to your music outside you might feeling self conscious because they will look hideous thus won't be able to enjoy the music as much... I say get some in ear phones.. at the end of the day.. do what you want, im happy with my hd600s

But you have to admit, the Audio-Technica AD900 headphones look much better than the AD700. The black and grey color scheme is much more conservative than the purple and champagne of the older set.

I would wear Audio-Technica headphones in public before I would wear Beats or SkullCandy. Admittedly, I am much older than many members of this forum.

Cheers,

Right, these "Beats" are marketed as having great bass etc, however there shocking for bass. I have just right now used my mates Beats to see how good the bass was, and truth is that my Sony MDR XB500's blow these out of the water, they don't come anywhere to mine, yes they look better, have noise cancellation and have better highs, but I think they should be priced just slightly more than my Sony's.

For now I've got a cheap little external Creative card(the X-fi 5.1 external, used it for my G51 laptop before I built my current sig rig last month or so), been waiting for more funds to come in and I have my eye on some of the Asus and Creative cards, but thats going to have to wait for this summer.

That equalizer sounds good to my ears, not everyone is the same and it will range depending on the type of music you listen to, so what you're saying makes no sense. I listen to a lot of rock, and the lows of the Pro's aren't as pronounced as the Black Eyes Peas demo makes them out to be, so they needed a bump for me, along with the highs. The songs sounded too crowded with white noise and it was hard for me to make out different harmonies or instruments with the mids balanced with the highs and lows, so yeah I decreased how pronounced they were and it works for me and they sound perfect.

Also, I have the Maximus IV, basically the Intel version of the Crosshair...lol...but what you're forgetting is that I got both the Beats Pros AND the Maximus IV at extreme discounts that would make me an idiot not to invest in them. I only paid about $230 for the Pros(which retails at $400), and only about 200 for the Maximus IV(which retails around $350). Whatever you might believe, there are no better deals than those when it comes to both products.

I <3 hackusations (and graphics card artifacts) but anyway:

There's a significant difference between earphones and headphones. Headphones are larger and worn over the head (see headphones) as opposed to being worn in the ear, you know earphones. I'm pretty sure I got the right one.

Also with it 'sounded too crowded with white noise and it was hard for me to make out different harmonies or instruments with the mids balanced with the highs and lows,' is often a symptom of poor instrument separation and well, not to my surprised, backed up by ljokerl's review of it:

Detail and clarity are similarly mediocre and the top end seems to roll off a bit earlier than with my HD25-1. The lack of notable treble emphasis does mean that there’s no sibilance or harshness to the sound of the Beats but some information is missing at the top, resulting in a slightly dark and muffled overall treble presentation without much air. Tonally, the Studios are on the warm side of things but not quite up there with the Phiaton MS400s. The soundstage of the Studio Beats is slightly larger than that of the Sennheiser HD25 but the Sennheisers are much better at separating out spatial cues, largely due to their greater clarity and detail. While the Studios do beat the Solos in presentation, they are still not what I would call spacious or three-dimensional in presentation. Most annoyingly, the Studios get overwhelmed fairly easily on busy tracks due to a lethal combination of congested presentation and overblown bass.
That's a sign of poor driver design / use of cheap drivers. Considering the price of the Beats...yeah moving on. You were equalising out a significant flaw of the Beats.
Also that discounted price still doesn't help with the Beats. The Ultrasone PRO750 is $250, the Ultrasone PRO550 is $150 and the Sennheiser HD-25II is $200. The M50 is ~$120. Glad the price of the M50 went up in a way. Excess demand = increased price.

Anyway, ended up 23-6 [could of been better] and 4th in the team (with the rest of my squad taking the other 3). Australasian pub play > US pub play for overall skill levels on servers. Even American expats say so.

No, the graph represents the Studios. There are also the Solo's, Solo HD's, (and very unfortunately, Justin Beiber's) the Justbeats and the Pros. All five of them are over-ear and on-ear headphones. They have a ton of the in-ears as well, such as the Tours, Diddy and Gaga Beats, the Powerbeats, iBeats, etc, etc.

I own the Pros, and that is the pair I am talking about, not the Studios. The Studios are the $300 pair that have the active noise cancelling that requires battery power, with the glossy plastic band. I own the Pros, which are the $400 pair that have the thick aluminum band and don't have active noise cancelling so don't require a battery and have larger drivers.

These are the different pairs:

Studios:
Pros:
In the review he reviews the Studios and the Solos, but not the newer Pros.

What I found is there is hardly any white noise in the Pros, and the instrument separation is a lot better than the Studios. I owned the Studios for about 2 weeks before I decided to swap them out for the Pros, and I didn't like the quality of the Studios and was distracted by the active noise cancelling, especially when compared to the Bose QC15's, which does noise cancelling a lot better at the same price.

Oh, and you should add me on BC2! I have been playing on Xbox for the past few years until I finally built my sig rig a couple months ago...haven't had much time to get practice in because I've been finishing up school and exams and such, so the mouse and keyboard haven't come back to me quite yet, and I haven't unlocked much yet...lol

From a regular ol' consumer's perspective (not a "hi-fi" enthusiast), there is nothing inherently wrong with a non-neutral frequency response. Many like a coloured sound, and a headphone with the Beats's frequency response curve could sound amazing. These headphones are for listening to music and maybe DJing, not mastering in the studio (although marketing may suggest otherwise...). Build quality and looks are legitimate concerns, but tend to be overly singled out in these sorts of debates. Sure the Beats are plasticky and absolutely ridiculous looking (to me), but so are many other headphones that don't get anywhere close to the flak that the Beats receive, that may even be highly lauded by those who bash the Beats. Ignore comfort, fashionability, morals and reputation of the company, etc, and just focus on the one prevailing criteria that people use to compare and rank headphones - sound quality - or arguably more important within the Beats's price range, cost/performance ratio.

Beats owners - feel free to justify the price you paid with the fashion symbol reason, but if you're defending your purchase with claims of superior sound quality, give up. You've been played by Noel Lee and Jimmy Iovine. Experienced headphone enthusiasts who have heard the Beats line and much, much more universally say that the Beats don't sound good for their price. You may personally think they sound great for what you paid, but you haven't heard the headphones that those criticising your purchase have heard.

As for my own thoughts, I've only heard the Beats Studio long enough to form a solid opinion, and I think they're worth about $200 less than their $300 Amazon price tag. But I can understand how someone would think the Studios are amazing if their closest reference was a pair of iBuds.

What one-post wonder said 100%. I don't mind coloured sound signatures, but too coloured is a huge problem. If you don't want to listen to how the artist wanted it to sound.....

I really doubt Monster would cover it, and I don't think Best Buy covers damage to that extent, but it seems like its a common problem and something that could easily happen from regular use of headphones. I'll ask my store next time I work and see what they tell me they would do in such a situation.
