i only see Linux becoming a widely used platform for the general public once more regular non-pc enthusiast become exposed to the platform by the use of media ect.

Personally, I'd take Ubuntu/Kubuntu Linux over Windows and Mac any day. But, the support for Windows' games, media, and plug-ins is pretty darn hard to beat.

I'd say Ubuntu is a little harder than Windows as someone new to it may not understand the limits of the OS and what it's compatibility limits are. Some things may not be easy for the n00b to understand. Fortunately though, Ubutnu is very stable and secure.

The thing is though, most people would have email, WLM (If that), music, internet and videos, Linux already has different stuff for that in droves that works nearly as well, if not just as well or better than in Windows.

MSDNAA is a very nice program, both for consumers and in a business sense. I have around $15k in MS software (about 85% of that value is Visual Studio 2010 ), although most of what I can get for free I don't use or have any need for. Windows and VS 2008 are the exceptions. Meanwhile, Microsoft has expanded its market share.
