Can this card be unlocked to the 6970 AMD ?

I know there is no 100% probaility, but i heard some cards cant.

And need to know whether this card can!

All 1GB cards are non-reference, so no it cannot.
Check out all reference 2GB HD 6950's if you'd like a chance at unlocking. (99% success rate)

It is hard to tell whether a card will unlock or not. Considering it is a non-reference card and at that 1 GB version, I vote no.

There have been 1GB non-reference unlockers. W1zzard over at TPU has a special BIOS unlocker that well, I haven't seen it fail yet on ANY 6950.

All the stuff I've read shows it's more unlikely that a 1gb card will unlock when compared to a 2gb card, probably due to ref/non ref.

having said that mine is non-ref and that unlcoekd fine.

The 2gb is usually only a little bit more money anyway, and you might see more fps at higher resolutions with AA on in some modern games.

edit: the 2gb asus one is the same price on scan and the twin frozr one is like £10 more..

but as some people said, unlocking shaders gives around 2% performance increase, whereas a modest overclock (880/1350) yields about 12% performance increase (reference)

If you have a custom design or 1 GB card, then use RBE to modify your existing BIOS. Save the BIOS from your card, load it into RBE, enable the shader unlock option on the last tab, then flash that modified BIOS to the card instead of the one downloaded from this page.

As you see, ref/nonref/1GB/2GB makes no difference at all. You just need to edit the BIOS yourself explaned above.
