CPU rated FSB

Thread Starter
I'm searching and searching online and CAN'T find the answer to my question!

Are intel CPUs limited to their advertised bus speed. To be more specific, I've been building a few systems with the E6500 and it's advertised bus speed is 1066. Is the processor limited to 1066 even when the FSB is changed to say 1333 in the bios?

In other words, at a 1333 fsb, will the data slow down when it hits a CPU with a 1066 advertised bus speed?

I've been driving myself crazy trying to figure this out!!

A CPU is made to run a rated clock at it's given bus speed by having a set multiplier. The motherboard chipsets have standard FSB speeds that OEM systems match to the given CPU; 400, 533 etc. Newer CPUs are more complicated with on-die busses, but back to the basics:

In the early days, we overclocked by changing the FSB of a 100 chip to that of a 133 chip. Even though the CPU had a locked multiplier, it is forced to run faster because it accepts whatever FSB it's given, FSBxCPUmultiple=CPU clock, basic math.

At 1333 FSB, yes a 1066 CPU is fed at 1333. And that is the basis of the good ol' FSB overclock that allowed us all to overclock "clock locked" chips since the olden days.

So from what you said, when you increase the fsb the CPU's "data pipe" actually increases... Do you think I will need any voltage increases to get to 333 fsb?

More details...

MB - Asus P5G41T-M
CPU - Intel E6500
Mem - Corsair DDR3 1333Mhz

It will not boot at bus speed of 333... It boots fine at 325... What am I missing? The motherboard is rated for 1333 fsb, but i can't get it there??

Sure,Go to the BIOS > Jumper Free setting> Increase FSB .

Note- As you increase you FSB, your clocks will rise and will produce heat,so invest in a good CPU cooler.

Drop your memory speed to the least in the settings.

You may not be able to boot at high FSB, as a result increase Vcore by a notch.

To your question: Yes! This is basic overclocking, and before you go to far, I would highly recommend reading a few guides on overclocking a core 2 quad!!!

Overclocking with the FSB, speeds up your whole system, not just your cpu! So you have to take into account your memory speed, timings, voltages......
