SATA II problem, none of them work.

Thread Starter
Ok guys. I have an interesting problem here.

The other day I noticed my 1.5TB drive performing very poorly (locking up my PC, etc), so I thought the drive was dying. I thought it would last a few days so I could go buy another drive to transfer it on, but then it suddenly died and didn't even show up in Windows.

So I tried booting Ububtu (on my 500GB drive) to see if I could troubleshoot better, but then my BIOS was throwing errors at me saying it couldn't read from the disk. I thought "Oh great, both my drives are dead".

After thinking a bit, I decided to unplug my optical drive from it's SATA II port, and plug my 1.5TB HDD into that port. Booted windows, and my 1.5TB hard drive showed up fine and was working for a few minutes. Suddenly it disappeared from Explorer. I plugged in my optical drive again to that port, and now my optical drive won't work.

So why would that port suddenly stop working after plugging my HDD into it? Could my HDD be frying the ports somehow?

Anyway.. The only thing I can think of is the "defect" that was on the original Sandy Bridge, motherboards. I didn't get my board replaced because it looked like that the ports "degraded" over a long period of time.

My two SSD drives are on SATA III which are working perfectly fine.

So I have a few questions:
Is my motherboard bad, or are my harddrives somehow messing up the SATA ports? I wouldn't want to buy a new motherboard to find out the HDD destroy those ports too. I also don't want to buy new hard drives to find out its a motherboard problem.

Sorry for the super long post, but hopefully someone manages to get through it and help me out a bit.

Any help is much appreciated, and I'm eagerly awaiting.

Replace it with a B3 board. The 15% is just BS Intel is pulling. I'm sure there is a reason why Intel threw billions of dollars out there to get this problem fixed. Besides that your 5-15% mileage in failure rate is going to vary. I don't know how Gigabyte set up their RMA's but Asus only give you 90 days to replace it free with no shipping charges. After the 90 days are up you're screwed and have to pay for the shipping yourself. I'm sure Intel just wants to downplay the Cougar Point chip problems but it's far worse than they expected.

Replace it! It's FREE!

Yeah you're better off starting the RMA right NOW and not waiting a single day longer. You took your chances and rolled the dice, and the dice didn't land the way you wanted.

Plus, some boards HAVE to be exchanged for RMA due to faulty VRM's (UD5 B2 had broken LLC that gave higher vcore overshoot on LLC1 than LLC2 does on B3 boards...)
