Play movies on linux from networked windows?

Thread Starter
I play around with linux on old Pentiums I have but never on a main machine so excuse the noob question.

-All my PCs are connected to one router through ethernet.
-One PC has windows server 08 R2 which has all my movies and music.
-I just installed ubuntu on another machine in the living room.

Is there a quick and easy way to get ubuntu to recognize the shares from the windows machine?

The windows machine is set up to allow "list dir contents" and "read" from any machine that connects to my network and it works fine when anyone connects using any windows machine. While in ubuntu (10.04 LTS) I click places>network>windows network but when I click on it I get "unable to mount location".

Can someone point out a tutorial I can use? Or let me know if theres a few simple programs I need to get before ubuntu will recognize the windows shared directories?

Thanks!

Have to go, but you should try searching for Samba.

I read about Samba a bit when I starting googling the situation but it seems I'm dumb and most people were trying to setup FTP and remote desktops or wanted to allow file sharing. I just want to stream the media so I didn't look to deeply into samba.

Will have another look into it thanks!!!

EDIT:
Ok. Got samba, installed it. "Unable to mount" error is gone.

Now I got the windows machine.

THANK YOU COMA :-)

You should set it up the other way around Linux file server, and Windows clients!

New to this and will read how to do that. Thanks!

Also, before I go making random linux threads:

-I got VLC and 'when' I have access to the windows machine I can stream media no prob.

-Audio, I have no audio. I use an optical cable to an amp. I right clicked on the audio button (top right hand corner in unbuntu 10.04) and selected "audio and analogue together" and "digital" but still don't have sound. Do I just need to find out what the audio device is in the dell machine and look for drivers or is there a generic linux audio driver that should do the job?

-Dual monitors. I have a monitor and TV. The HTPC is using a nvidia 8800 and played HD content fine under windows but I'm having a little trouble with configuration. in windows I had the monitor as a main screen and the tv as extra desktop space. with linux, I've fiddled with the settings a bit but can only seem to stretch the desktop over both, which I don't want because when I try to full screen vlc centers the media on both so the image is half and half.

maybe thats a vlc setting to have it only fullscreen on the TV but I still don't want x stretched and need to figure out how to have x only on the monitor.

ANNNNND I think thats about all the configuration the HTPC would need.

Thanks for reading everyone!
