Crazy High CPU Temps Out Of The Clear Blue Sky - Experienced overclocker stumped

Wow like I dunno what is going on.

I am an experienced overclocker and have been doing this for over 10 years, but I am at a complete loss here.

I have a Phenom II X3 at 4.1GHz w/ 1.42 voltage with a zalman 92mm cooler + artic 5 thermal paste. My load temps are typically around 52c at the very most when gaming and around 38c while im doing regular internet browsing or whatever else.

Now I was playing Bad Company 2 a few hours ago and my screen went black, so I restarted my PC from the tower. Then tried to play again and it happened again.

So I checked my CPU temps and they were at 80 degrees celcius.....yes I said celcius.

I opened my tower and checked my heatsink and everything was fine, fan was spinning, there was no dust and the heatsink was properly seated. But I reseated it and checked the thermal paste and it looked fine. So I turn my PC on with the case open, and boot up into windows and check temps...and its still 80c. So I restarted my pc immediately and went into the BIOS, lowered the overclocks down to 3.2GHz and lowered the voltages to stock as well and now temps are at 52c just sitting at the desktop screen. As I type this my CPU temp is 51-52c.

Why are my idle temps at stock settings, as high as my load temps were when overclocked?

Why did my CPU suddenly do this. The temps don't make any sense.

I have had my CPU overclocked at 4.1GHz for over 6 months and have never had heat issues. I game with HWMonitor on at all times and 52c is the max I have ever seen it go.

I am completely stumped. What is going on?

My thought would be to try and swap out different components to isolate a problem. It could be wise to try a bench on a different MB if available, same with a PSU. If you kept the stock HSF from AMD you might want to try that too, in case there is something wrong with the cooler (not likely but who knows?)

For now maybe underclocking/undervolting might be a safe start before you start testing the components if you want to keep your CPU out of the danger zone while gaming and whatnot.

If that really is the case, I think your CPU is dead. 1.42 is still perfectly safe, but all chips react differently to voltage.

But I thought the Phenoms were capped at either 62 or 70c for an automatic reboot?

I've come to this realization too. The BFBC2 Steam sale happened, I bought it, my CPU got used like NEVER BEFORE. I needed two bumps of vcore to make it stable and I'm still not sure it's enough.

I can't believe how crazy this game is on the CPU.

Did you not stress test it? Or am I in for a rude surprise as well when I buy that game (Im planning to) even after 8 hours of linpack?

20 runs of LinX with full RAM used and around 4 hours of Prime95.

Same here.

I was playing BFBC2 for a few hours until I got a BSOD. I had to up the voltage two notches and I haven't gotten a BSOD since.

My OC was stable under 8 hours of Prime95 blend.
