Erratic GPU Usage in Metro 2033

Yes, I searched this issue extensively (on OCN and google) and all the fixes I found haven't worked for me. Long story short, I have 470 SLI OCed to 850 core, so I should be getting constant smooth frames in metro at 1920x1200, even maxed out, but my gpu usage constantly drops off between 30 and 70%, resulting in choppy frames. When it gets up to about 80 I get 60fps, and it rarely goes up toward 99. I know overheating isn't the problem since I'm on water, temps don't get above 60 except in furmark.

I know my cpu isn't bottlenecking my cards, it's a 2500k at 5.1ghz, it shows high usage during game on all cores, and when I run furmark or crysis warhead, I get constant 99% usage. Anything I can do to fix this?

Edit: review sites like this one show stock 470 sli on a 4ghz i7 920 getting a minimum of 35 frames. I'm overclocked a good 25% and I constantly dip below 20 fps

Do you have Vsync on? If so, it could limit your fps at a max of 60.

And, if you could list out all the fixes that you have found and tried, it would be helpful too.

Driver issue's? Maybe a bad overclock?

I have vsync forced on via d3doverrided to prevent a lot of screen tearing I was getting, yeah, but I'm not complaining about the 60fps cap, I know vsync does that. Vsync shouldn't wreck my minimum frame rate though, which is what's causing the problem.

I tried:
verifying/defragmenting local steam cache
running in dx10 or dx9 mode
a couple different user.cfg tweaks (don't remember the exact details, I think I turned vsync on via that file)
running metro in safe mode
deleting local content, reinstalling
moved game files to SSD


What I've read about but haven't tried:
Unplugging my secondary monitor (for some reason metro dislikes multi-monitors?)
Older drivers

@Stealth: my OC is stable with no artifacting in furmark or afterburner for 2 hours +. And I backed down my OC to 820 and then 800 core on the same voltage to rule that out, still got crappy gpu usage and pretty much the same framerates, so I'm leaning toward driver issues. Are there a good set of drivers anyone knows that I can try to revert to?

Are you using the latest drivers at the moment?

No, crysis, crysis warhead, crysis 2 all play with butter smooth frames at maxed out or close to maxed out settings, and always above 90% usage. Same with Bad Company 2. Using 270.61, which I think is the latest

Well, if the lower-than-99% GPU usage coincides with getting 60FPS, then v-sync explains those instances. V-sync will cause lower GPU usage anytime that the card WOULD be running at >60fps if v-sync was off. It's a framerate cap, and hence a workload cap.

Some ideas:

If you've got v-sync turned on by two separate means (i.e. in-game and 3dOverrider), don't do that. You want it forced on in one place only.

Make sure everything is set to Default in NVCP for Metro.

Turn off advanced physX.

Turn triple-buffering on/off in D3DOverrider ... guessing you tried both ways, but thought I'd mention.

Are you 100% certain you're running the EXACT same settings as the benchmark you were looking at? Most sites don't quote every single setting, so you may not be. And really ... online benchies aren't meant to tell you 'what FPS you'll get at home', they are meant to compare the cards with each other. You can drive yourself NUTS trying to get the same FPS as what you see in online benches. Best to just assume ... you won't.

Why don't you post a run of the benchmark for us, using whatever settings you run at. Maybe someone else w/similar system could help by running it the same way on theirs.

I believe Metro 2033 has a problem with SLi configurations. Try turning off a card and playing.

okay, gimme 5 minutes, will do. I may have vysnc on in multiple places so I'll check that and try it one on at a time. And the low gpu usage corresponds to the drop in frames, aka I'll be getting like 19fps and 30% usage, then for a few seconds 60fps and 79% usage.

More ideas:

Watch your vram usage using the AB OSD while gaming. It could be you're hitting vram capacity at times. Usually at about 1240MB used, you'll start to see lag and lowered GPU usage because of it.

Mine is on there somewhere near the top (I helped start the thread smile.gif), and we have similar systems.

Also, if you're thinking you can play Metro totally maxed out on VH including 4xMSAA, ADoF, Tess, and Adv. PhysX on SLI 470's w/o it EVER getting choppy ... don't. Cause you can't. Trust me, I know wink.gif

I run DX11 VH w/tessellation, and leave off PhysX, ADoF, and 4xAA. That keeps it from ever getting choppy. Maxed out, the game is no joke ... in certain parts, it's brutal.
