8800gt and zalman vf-1000 (old stuff I know :))

Well,

I am a complete newbie at this and the first time around I had a friend do it for me. Unfortunately, the 8800gt he did for me has died and I got it replaced but now I have to assemble the zalman on my own.

Two questions: I have these heatsinks

[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Zalman-ZMRHS1-Memory-Heatsink-Coolers/dp/B000790D0G"]Amazon.com: Zalman USA ZMRHS1 VGA Memory Heatsink Coolers: Electronics[/ame]

but I take it that the thermal tape is not reusable, so should I instead opt to remove the remnants of the thermal tape on this item and use Arctic Silver 5 in its stead?

Number 2:
what do I do about these guys?

http://www.overclock.net/attachments/nvidia-cooling/61240d1196960129-vf-900-enough-cool-8800gt-88gt-heatsinks.jpg

Obviously, I can't put AS onto that? I also noticed that the enzotech heatsinks I had on that held on very loosely. I still have four new ones left so I guess I will just use those, but what is the best way to secure them?

Thanks for helping a newb biggrin.gif

Did the heatsink come in contact to those little guys? (Your old one). If not, then you can get by with the airflow blowing atop them from the vf-1000.

If you're genuinely concerned, you can throw a ramsink on top of them, but that may not be necessary.

They did, actually, I could see little imprints on the heat sinks that I took off of the little guys. The thing is that on all the heatsinks the thermal tape looks hardly used. I don't see why it can't just be remount them onto the new one. I think maybe they just didn't get a chance to cook in on the old one?

If you feel comfortable with the condition of the old pads, you can reuse it. The stuff is cheap though, you can buy a sheet and cut out your own if you feel the need.

If there was cooling, definitely find something to throw on top there. There are lots of cheap copper sinks that you can put on easily.

That's the thing. I'm having difficulty finding this thermal tape. What is the name for it, or perhaps if you can show me a link?

Thanks

I haven't ever had to buy any tape, but after a bit of digging I'm still somewhat lost. FrozenCPU hasn't let me down before, their stuff can be found here

Since you're just going to be using small heatsinks, anything thin should do really. Sorry I can't be of more help, I'm not too familiar with thermal pads frown.gif.

That is fine, I was recommended some sekisui pads just now and they seem to be perfect. However, perhaps you can recommend some thermal paste? I heard that AS5 can potentially short circuit your GPU if improperly applied. Since I am a newb, should I go with arctic ceramique or mx-2?
For the core? The 8800GT has an exposed core (no heat spreader) so I'd avoid using AS5 since it is capacitive.

Personally, I'm cheap. I just bought a big tube of Arctic Silver Ceramique because it gets the job done and I don't really care about 2-3c. Shin Etsu, MX-2 will both work.
