WoW - How much cpu power do you need? (Answer: More than Sandy Bridge) - Page 16

MMOs lag because of internets. 2D MMOs lag on my 6850 with almost 20% CPU/GPU usage.

Farih can you copy/paste your realmlist.*** file for me? I think thats all I'd need to connect to EU.

You cannot connect to an EU realm with a US account on a US client.

The discussion here was about being able to get high framerates in densely populated areas, which we've already established isn't possible due to WoW not being optimized for new hardware. WoW was written over 7 years ago and will only saturate 2 cores, expecting similar performance than with Metro 2033 is illogical.

You can ignore Cilraaz and me all you want, but the fact is you're being bottlenecked by ancient software. Decent CPU, decent GPU, adequate memory and yet still no amazing FPS while in densely populated areas.

Based on how cobbled together the engine is at this point, that system would not give "perfectly playable" framerate at Ultra graphics. Mid-20s, maybe, in an intensive environment. [edit: Given the original engine (or even TBC-era engine), it would have given awesome framerates. Wrath of the Lich King and Cataclysm came with some engine upgrades that had some hefty overhead to them. Those two expansions knocked out a lot of budget gaming systems.]

Totally incorrect. WoW actually uses very little bandwidth. Think of it this way: The server doesn't send you the graphics for the area. The server says that at co-ordinates x,y is character model 0001, with visible armor models 000a, 000b, 000c, 000d, and 000e. The game client then cross-references these with the MPQ files that WoW is packed into and extracts the proper models to be displayed.

The actual data sent to you from the server is just pointers and location packets, which are not very bandwidth dependent.

Actually I got 57 fps with a 5.3GHz overclock, which given thats the lowest you'll probably ever see its pretty close to the magical 60.

There is a reason I'm ignoring you, its because you've been saying the same thing over and over and I don't agree with you.

I get lower fps in Metro 2033, mostly because of a gpu bottleneck, but also because that game is poorly coded. My point was the cpu workload in Metro is lower than in WoW, because they're two different types of games. Metro 2033 would never work as a WoW style MMO.

You could take something like BFBC2 and double the players you'd get pretty close to what I've shown here. There is a reason BFBC2 only supports 32 players.

It makes zero sense comparing WoW performance to other games, for the last time it's over 7 years old with the backend only worked on a few times since.

No I'm not trolling at all.

I don't really care how old the game is.

In fact because its older I should be able to get more fps, at least thats how logic works. I don't get lower fps in 3D Mark 2006 simply because its 5 years old, do I?

No, but you get lower FPS in 3DMark6 than in 3DMark11 because it's not optimized for newer hardware. Plus, you lose by default for comparing benching software to a graphics engine. That's not comparable, we'll call that "fishing."

What you just said makes no sense. No one is suggesting that you get lower FPS now than you did 7 years ago. We are suggesting that we've hit the point of diminishing returns, and now performance is no longer scaling linearly. The software cannot keep up, it doesn't matter how much faster your chip is.
