Haf wit and I tried to get some screens together, we're both running at 4.8GHz... Since we couldn't see each others screens we just tried to talk it out, not sure how well we did with that but here are my results.

No problem, and sorry about that wife thing biggrin.gif

I don't think there is anything wrong with my results, and while not perfect matches our results are so close that any inconsistency can be chalked up to different viewing angles.

With that in mind, I'll stick by my OP thoughts, obviously I played WoW like many have and still do on a Pent D/Athlon 3400+. That wasn't really the point of my OP, WoW is very cpu intensive due to a number of things, one of which is its age.

However I think its still a good way to gauge modern cpu performance, because its so demanding. If all games were coded better/used all cores & threads than the AMD x6 would be the second best cpu option prior to SB and still the third best with its release. However that is simply not the case, and we should continue to push how fast a single core is instead of looking to multi core designs like BD which scarified some single thread performance for more cores.

As an addendum to my last post, I apparently missed something while testing. Dropping shadows to Low gave me a HUGE increase in frame rate - from 19fps to 36fps. However, it still didn't appreciably change WoW's CPU usage. And the frame rate is highly variable as well, as people move around, into and out of the vicinity.

At this point I think there are two options:

1. Use city services in some city other than Stormwind or Orgrimmar, and lower shadow effects while raiding.
2. Get a Pentium 4 and overclock it to 8GHz.

I would like to point out, that just because your GPU isn't hitting 100% doesn't mean you have a bottleneck. The game just isn't using the full GPU.
Both my buddy and I are testaments to this fact, we both play eve, and we both are not hitting 100% on our systems while playing eve.

My system is my sig rig, and his system is an i7 875k, 8gb of ram, GTX 470. Neither of us hit 100% in eve.
Wow is not a high demand game on the GPU, a lot of the usage is on the CPU because of having so many people in game.

This situation is honestly just Blizzard's fault. They have a very old engine, and to rewrite it means killing legacy support for old hardware which is a direct profit loss for them. I dealt with this when I used to play WoW. If the game even came closed to utilizing modern CPU's properly it'd be frame capped in the hundreds like couter-strike is today.

Haha, no worries. I do use world of warcraft as my final test when doing overclocks, as no matter how long I let something sit in Prime95/IBT/OCCT/etc, WoW will crash me in 5 seconds flat if there's any sort of instability. I played Aion for a year, and even though the graphics are far better, the engine definitely was easier on my computer as I had higher framerates with less resources. At least Blizzard is good for something. biggrin.gif
